Staff to Provide Recommendations on Enhancing Equity Task Force Report
A review of the recommendations of the Enhancing Equity Task Force is being conducted by Toronto District School Board (TDSB) senior staff, following a vote by Trustees to receive the report during a recent Board Meeting. Read the Board decision (page 1). The staff report indicating proposed directions and next steps will be presented to the January 31 Planning and Priorities Committee of the Board.

The 80-page report incorporated year-long consultation with thousands of TDSB community members including students, staff and families, bringing to the surface the systemic barriers that many students are facing. Read the report and recommendations online. 

Director Named Honorary Chair for National Holocaust Education Conference 
TDSB Director of Education John Malloy has been appointed Honorary Chair for the third annual National Policy Conference on Holocaust Education by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. The conference will be taking place on January 27 and 28. Learn more.
The TDSB is also proud to be part of the center’s January 27th Initiative, which is comprised of school boards that recognize the United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day each year on January 27.
Report Released on the State of Repair of Ontario Schools
A recently released report, called Ontario’s Deteriorating Schools: The Fix is Not In, estimates addressing current maintenance and repairs in Ontario schools would require an additional $1.6 billion in provincial funding each year. BOARD MEETING NOTES

Board to Develop New Multi-Year Strategic Plan
 
TDSB Trustees and staff will be working together on a new multi-year strategic plan, which is expected to come before the Board of Trustees for consideration in May 2018. As part of this process, an ad hoc committee will be established. Read the Board decision (page 2).
Update on Educational Development Charges (EDCs) 
 

As part of its continued work to advocate for greater flexibility to collect and use EDCs revenue for improving TDSB schools the Board has directed staff to commence a legal review of the legislation.
Based on the total number of units under construction, proposed or planned across the city, it is estimated that the TDSB could generate approximately $300 million through EDCs to help support urgent school infrastructure needs. Read the Board decision (page 5). Learn more about EDCs. 
2016-17 Audited Financial Statements Approved
The Board has received and approved the audited financial statements for its fiscal year, which ended on August 31, 2017.

Transition of Parenting and Family Literacy Centres to Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centres 

In order to provide stability to families and staff during the transition of Parenting and Family Literacy Centres to Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centres, the Board approved a service agreement with the City of Toronto and an operating budget for the first year. The Chair will also write a letter to the Minister of Education to seek fully funded collective agreements. Read the Board decision (page 5).
Executive Compensation Community Feedback

To meet Ministry of Education requirements, the TDSB conducted community consultations about its Executive Compensation Program. A summary of this feedback and the Executive Compensation Program will now be submitted to the Ministry. Read the Board decision (page 3).
