Learning from Las Vegas
(Facsimile of the original 1972 Edition, 2017) & (Revised Edition, 1977)
Learning From Las Vegas (1972), by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, is a seminal book in architectural theory that challenged the modernist ideals of the time. Originating from a Yale architecture studio, the book examines the commercial landscape of the Las Vegas Strip, arguing for the significance of symbolism, signage, and vernacular architecture. The authors introduced the concept of the “decorated shed”—a functional building adorned with communicative signage—as opposed to the modernist “duck,” where form and structure dictate meaning. This critique of modern architecture helped lay the foundation for Postmodernism, celebrating the "ugly and ordinary" over the “heroic and monumental.”
Beyond its architectural impact, the book holds a place in design history. The original 1972 edition, designed by Muriel Cooper for MIT Press, was an oversized, visually striking volume—a design choice the authors despised for its irony. Venturi and Scott Brown later pushed for a redesigned cheaper paperback edition, which they considered more fitting for the subject matter.
See both versions on display in the Hatch Reading Room this week.

I Am a Monument: On Learning from Las Vegas (2008) by Aron Vinegar
The Hatch Reading Room, on the 4th floor of Marvin Hall, is here for you to de-stress, work on projects, take a break to read, and enjoy a quiet view of campus. Hours: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. 📚
