A Note from the President

It’s a time of celebration: commencement is right around the corner, and whether your Tiger is a freshman or is getting ready to walk across that stage, we should all take a moment to appreciate the journey these young people have undertaken at LSU. They are growing as individuals and stepping out of their comfort zones as they interact with classmates, participate in one of our more than 400 student organizations, engage in research, fieldwork or other scholarly endeavors, and find out what they truly want to do with life. And all of us at LSU are so proud to be a part of these milestones and to play whatever role, no matter how major or humble it might be, in your Tiger’s success.

And we can’t wait to see what this year’s graduates will accomplish. A degree from LSU will brings a lifetime of benefits, from higher than average starting and mid-career salaries and a network of alumni spanning the globe to achievements ranging from Pulitzer Prizes to landing a rover on Mars.

As always, thank you for trusting us with your Tiger.

 F. King Alexander

TOPS Update
TOPS remains a great concern for all Louisiana students. The proposed TOPS budget is funded at only 25% of the previous year’s level, which would tremendously reduce access for Louisiana students. However, the Regular Legislative Session doesn’t end until June 6, so much can change between now and then. Fill out the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FASFA) now if you haven’t already. If there is indeed a shortfall, those with completed FASFAs will be given TOPS priority over those who did not submit the paperwork.
End of the Year Checklist
Not sure of exactly what your Tiger has to do before the end of the semester? Check out this end of the year checklist that’ll keep your Tiger on track, in the midst of finals.
  • Fill out your FAFSA form for 2016-2017 year – https://fafsa.ed.gov
  • Schedule a strategy session with your FYE staff member –lsu.edu/fye
  • Double check your fall 2016 course schedule.
  • Make a study plan for finals!
  • Check with your RA or ResLife to see when you have to move out of your dorm.
  • Find on-campus or off-campus housing for the 2016-2017 school year.
  • Donate left over nonperishable food to LSU Food Pantry.

Student Strategy Sessions
Transitioning to college can be tough, but FYE is here to help make it easier. At the beginning of the year students are assigned an FYE staff member based on the first letter of their last name. Our staff members are here to answer any of your students’ questions, help them get involved, and find their place on LSU's campus. Students can schedule a strategy session anytime throughout the year at lsu.campuslabs.com/beacon.

Way to Geaux, Res Life Students!
The end of the year means two things for Residential Life: closing time and celebrating students. The list of student leaders earning accolades with roots in Residential Life is longer than ever. Congratulations and way to geaux to these outstanding students!

It’s Almost Time to Move Out
Res halls close May 7, 2016 at 8 p.m., but students should to check out within 24 hours of their last final. Make sure your student schedules a checkout session with the floor’s Resident Assistant to complete the check out process.
When your student is packing to move out, encourage him or her to donate any unwanted items that are in good condition to the annual move-out donation drive. Collection bins will be placed in each hall’s lobby for students to leave unwanted items that will be donated to local charities.

Residential Life has partnered with University & Student Services (USS) to provide summer storage for students. USS will pick up items directly from your on-campus room, store the items in a climate-controlled environment for the summer or longer, and return them back to your fall housing assignment on or off campus.

Have a New Tiger Living on Campus for Fall 2016?
Room assignments for incoming Tigers are well under way! Haven’t applied yet? No problem! Residential Life is still accepting applications for fall 2016. Did you know we have more freshmen from Louisiana living on campus than ever before? It’s true!

With the last final over, it’s time for some well-deserved relaxation.  But what comes next?  Making the most of summer includes taking steps along the 4-Year Career Plan to clarify, explore, connect and achieve!  Here are a few resources and tips:

LSU Academic Programs Abroad

Even though we are sad to see our students leave campus, Academic Programs Abroad is accustomed to students leaving for new adventures. It is our goal for students to have an academic experience abroad during their undergraduate career. Our students who have studied abroad know the impact that has had on their life and academic career, but now they are coming to understand how their time abroad has influenced their life after graduation.
LSU Political Science graduate, Amber Galjour, has taken to heart the lessons she learned on her study abroad experience. In 2014, Amber participated in our LSU in Paris summer program with LSU faculty and 30 other LSU students. Having come from a small town in Louisiana, Amber never dreamed a summer in Paris would completely change her career path. After exploring the City of Lights for the entire month of June, studying internationally, making new friends, learning the value of independence, and creating memories to last her a lifetime, she started down an entirely new path with confidence and a strong desire to see more of the world. Amber graduated in December of 2015 and has since started her studies for a Masters in International Social Policy at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Moving around the world was no easy feat, but Amber drew from her study abroad experience helped to prepare for the move. She plans to graduate and then pursue a career in international higher education to help other students experience the unexpected benefits from studying abroad.

Planning for Summer School at Another Institution?
If you are planning to enroll at another college or university this summer with the intention of transferring credit back to LSU, you should be mindful of a few policies and procedures that may affect your summer school enrollment elsewhere.
1.       LSU will not accept credit from a 2 year institution if the credit takes you beyond the second year in your degree program.  Essentially, that means no 2 year institution credit will be accepted beyond 60 hours of your requirements in a 120 hour degree program.
2.       If you have had the misfortune of earning an “F” grade in an LSU course, you CANNOT repeat that course at another institution outside of the LSU system.
3.       Many courses at other institutions have been evaluated for LSU equivalents, and you can find these equivalents from a database entitled “Tiger Transfer Tables” maintained by the LSU Office of Admissions.  This can be found at this web link.
4.       If you cannot find a course in the Tiger Transfer Tables, you can request a transfer course evaluation at this web link:  www.lsu.edu/evaluation.
5.       Additional information about “how credit transfers to LSU” can be found here.
6.       Upon completion of your summer school enrollment, you must have the transfer institution send an official transcript to LSU’s Office of Admissions.

If you have questions about summer school transfer credits or other advising questions, contact a UCFY counselor for assistance.  Appointments are available by calling 225-578-6822 to arrange for an appointment.  Limited walk-in appointments are available here in 150 Allen Hall each workday between 8:10 am and 4:10 pm.

Final Examinations & Concentrated Study Period
Final exam week is May 2 - 7, 2016.  The university provides students with a concentrated study period (April 27 - May 1, 2016) to help students prepare for final exams.  Encourage your student to check their exam schedule multiple times, as course exams often do not fall during their normal class time.

Grade Appeals
Students may formally appeal a grade if they feel that a professor or instructor has made an error in assessing their final grade.  The process begins as follows; additional steps in the process can be found in the LSU General Catalog.
“Appeals of final grades must be initiated by the student by requesting in writing or actually attending a meeting with the faculty member who assigned the grade at issue within 30 calendar days after the first day of classes in the next regular semester.”
“The student must meet with the faculty member concerned to discuss the situation and attempt to arrive at a solution. Although each may have an advisor present, it is believed that under most circumstances, the meeting will be more productive if only the student and the faculty member are present. To the extent an advisor is utilized at this or any stage of the procedure, the advisor is not allowed to argue, advocate, make statements, present information, question witnesses, or raise objections on behalf of either party. The faculty member must inform the student of his/her decision within 7 calendar days.”

Grade Exclusion Policy
Many courses at LSU offer the option for GRADE EXCLUSION if a grade of D or F had been previously earned.  If a student is planning to repeat a class in summer term or for Fall 2016 because of a D or F grade in the same class from a previous semester, it may be appropriate to take advantage of this policy.  Essentially, grade exclusion allows a student to repeat the class and have the first grade excluded when calculating the cumulative and LSU GPA for the new semester and subsequent semesters following.
If the student wishes to explore this option, the first step is a conversation with a UCFY counselor before the last day to add a class on the academic calendar.
PHI ETA SIGMA, National Honor Society for LSU Freshmen
LSU University College hosted its annual Phi Eta Sigma Initiation Ceremony on Tuesday, April 21, 2016 at LSU Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom.  University College’s Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma inducted 316 freshmen scholastic achievers, and presented the L. B. Lucky Award and Senior Award.

Congratulations to all of the 316 freshmen scholastic achievers. Check out the photos of the induction ceremony by clicking here.
