Local firefighters help shape the future of rescue
Clay Fire’s first responders know the risks of searching a collapsed building—and their experience is helping Notre Dame engineers develop a new way to reach people trapped inside. Working with local rescue crews, professor Margaret McGuinness and her team are testing a flexible “vine robot” that carries a camera through tight spaces and around debris. Firefighters are putting it through its paces at Clay Fire’s training site, offering feedback that could help rescue teams find survivors while keeping their own crews safer.

Local partnership helps students understand life with dementia
For someone living with dementia, a trip to the grocery store can bring challenges others may not recognize. REAL Services and Notre Dame are working together to help young people understand those moments through The Roberta Project, a virtual reality experience being developed for middle and high school students. The partnership combines local dementia care expertise with technology from Hesburgh Libraries to show how a little patience can make a difference—in a checkout line, at home or anywhere in our community.

Notre Dame students help overturn wrongful conviction in Elkhart
For years, Notre Dame’s Exoneration Justice Clinic students and attorneys worked alongside Iris Seabolt to clear her name. This September, she was fully exonerated of a wrongful conviction in Elkhart after spending nearly 19 years in prison. But the team’s commitment extended well beyond the courtroom. After her release in 2022, they helped her find housing, transportation and resources to rebuild her life while continuing the legal fight.

Notre Dame chefs’ entry puts local anti-poverty partnership on the menu
Notre Dame’s entry in this year’s YMCA Greatest Chefs of Michiana competition comes with a helping of community purpose. Executive Chef Laura Wiese and Economics Professor Patrick Turner are teaming up on a Texas-inspired dish that highlights Padua, an anti-poverty program powered locally by Notre Dame’s Lab for Economic Opportunities and Goodwill Industries of Michiana. Their menu nods to the program’s Fort Worth roots and features affordable ingredients families could use at home. The October 15 event raises money for the YMCA of Greater Michiana.

Notre Dame and LOGAN welcome fans with sensory needs
The roar of Notre Dame Stadium is part of the experience, but for fans with sensory processing needs, it can be overwhelming. A new partnership with LOGAN Community Resources offers a quiet place to step away and recharge. Located near Section 108 in Corbett Family Hall, the stadium’s new sensory room provides support from LOGAN staff and Notre Dame Police comfort K9s. The space welcomes fans with sensory needs beginning 90 minutes before kickoff through the end of the third quarter, helping more families enjoy gameday together.
