Volunteer with Second Chances
Second Chances provides empowering, free clothing to 600+ neighbors in need and distributes more than 3,000 pairs of new socks and underwear to folks in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts each year.
We raise part of our organizational budget through a year end appeal mailing to approximately 500 generous community members. Volunteers are crucial to getting this mailing out on time and having it be as effective as possible to raise the funds needed to serve our community.
This year we have openings for up to six volunteers to help personalize letters and stuff envelopes. Please have neat writing, a willingness to work on an important administrative project, and good attention to detail as you'll be matching letters and envelopes.
The dates and times are: Monday, December 4, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please let us know at least a two-hour block and which time/date you're available. You are welcome to sign up for more than a two-hour block of time and/or multiple days.
Our office is located in Union Square, Somerville, Massachusetts. We'll be working in a second floor conference room which is up a flight of stairs. We will send confirmation and the address and contact information on Friday, December 1, 2023 toward the end of the day.
If you are interested please email volunteer@garbagetogarden.org.

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine
Volunteer Food Rescuers help transport food from food donor partners to local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other human service agencies in our communities. Each rescue averages 40 pounds of food, provides 32 meals and takes 45 minutes of time! Food rescues may be completed by public transport, by personal vehicle, on foot and even by bicycle. Whether it’s once-a-month, once-a-week, or once-a day volunteers are needed to provide a reliable food rescue service by fostering community connections to reduce food waste and food insecurity!
