Literacy for Life Barnes & Noble Field Trip

United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society members spent three mornings in February chaperoning more than 60 third-grade children on our Literacy for Life field trips at Barnes & Noble book store in Camp Hill.

Each volunteer was paired with a Downey Elementary School student to complete a scavenger hunt and read with. Thanks to the generous support of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, students were able to pick out books to take home. The children also received a follow up note of encouragement from their Bridges Buddy in the weeks following the event.

Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Yet every year, more than 80 percent of low-income children miss this crucial milestone. That’s why education and school readiness is a priority area for United Way of the Capital Region. Bridges Society’s Literacy for Life field trips are just one way we are striving to help children succeed.

Youth Day of Caring

Members of United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society rolled-up their sleeves and volunteered alongside 200 local high school students for United Way’s 17th Annual Youth Day of Caring.

Volunteers completed projects including general clean-up, trash pick-up, weeding and mulching, and painting throughout Harrisburg City Island to prepare the park for the spring season.

Students from the following 10 high schools participated: Bishop McDevitt, Camp Hill, Central Dauphin East, Commonwealth Charter Academy, Cougar Academy, John Harris, Middletown, Red Land, SciTech and Susquehanna Township.

Bridges Society members served as volunteer project leaders and chaperones. This is one of several exclusive volunteer projects that the Bridges Society participates in each year.

Youth Day of Caring is sponsored by Members 1st Federal Credit Union (Lead Sponsor), Capital BlueCross & Healthy You Café (Lunch Sponsor), Harrisburg Kiwanis Youth Foundation (Secondary Sponsor), F&M Trust (Sponsor), PSECU (Sponsor), Reynolds Enterprises (Sponsor) and BL Companies (In-Kind Sponsor).
