Capital Region Community Dashboard Shows Recent Data Trends

Data about recent demographic trends has been released via the Capital Region Community Dashboard, a web-based resource providing information on health and human service issues in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties. The site, which is the only one of its kind in the region, includes the most up-to-date data on nearly 100 key indicators in the areas of health, education, income, basic needs and demographics.

The Capital Region Community Dashboard was created to help local residents, health and human service organizations, education institutions, places of worship and the business community better understand the issues impacting the region as well as track trends and progress. The project is a partnership between Dauphin County, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, Harrisburg Housing Authority, Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, Partnership for Better Health, Penn State Harrisburg, Penn State Health, UPMC Pinnacle and United Way of the Capital Region.

Statistics recently released through the dashboard indicate Cumberland County is the fastest growing county both in the Capital Region and across the state. The data shows rent is more expensive in Cumberland and Dauphin counties compared to the state average. In fact, 27 percent of households in the Capital Region have unaffordable housing costs. The fastest growing population in the Capital Region includes individuals age 65 and older.

Volunteers Needed to Help Working Families with Tax Preparation

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for.

The service is offered through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program, a community partnership led by United Way of the Capital Region that is committed to the economic stability of local families. In tax year 2018, 272 volunteers filed 4,691 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.6 million returned to local families. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services was $21,100, which helped increase their household income by an average of 6 percent.

No previous experience is required and training is provided. Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters (no tax preparing required for this position). Scheduling is flexible with daytime, evening and Saturday opportunities available from January through April 2020.

The Money in Your Pocket campaign is supported by the PNC Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

For those interested in learning more, several informational sessions will be held in November. To see a list of dates or to sign up, visit http://uwcr.partnershipplanners.org/openhouse.
