A Letter From Our CEO
Pause to Reflect and Prepare for Action:
A Letter from Our CEO Bobby Watts
I have been fortunate to be able to pause and reflect on the tremendous information and experiences many of us shared at our recent National Health Care for the Homeless Conference & Policy Symposium (#HCH2019) from May 22-25 in Washington, D.C. The theme of our 2019 Conference was “Working Together for Justice,” and we are pleased to have had 900 attendees join us in D.C. We are honored to have received feedback praising the quality of our presentations and the insights of keynote presentations by Catherine Lhamon, Chair of the U.S Commission on Civil Rights, and Leilani Farha, UN Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, as well as the rousing call to action of the privately-funded rally organized by our National Consumer Advisory Board. Learn More and Take Action on Damaging Proposals from Federal Government
When federal agencies want to create a new policy, they must publicly publish details of the proposed new policy or “rule” and allow stakeholders 60 days to comment. Currently, the Trump Administration has four proposed rules that would gravely impact the HCH community and three finalized rules with implications for our work. One rule open for comment would prohibit mixed-status immigrant families from living in public housing, and the other rule open for comment would change the way the poverty line is calculated to reduce the number of people eligible for public benefits. There are templates and simple instructions available (for the public housing rule and for the poverty line adjustment rule), and it is important that organizations and individuals take action. Learn more about these rules and the impact of three finalized rules in Mobilizer. Not receiving our monthly action alert? Sign up now.
Homelessness Is Not Permanent: Celebrate Successes this Summer Solstice
On June 21, join us in celebrating the Summer Solstice by shining a light on those who have overcome homelessness. People without homes face incredible challenges to survive, let alone thrive, yet their experience of homelessness does not define them. Some individuals find successes—whether large or small—as they surmount barriers to becoming housed. Summer Solstice Success Celebrations are joyful observances of these victories of people who have endured and overcome homelessness. Furthermore, each ceremony reaffirms our knowledge that affordable housing, adequate incomes, comprehensive health care, and supportive services can end homelessness not only for individuals, but also for society. Read our advocacy recommendations, view our webinar for organizing tips, and learn how you can hold your own celebration. Contact Katherine Cavanaugh, National Consumer Advocate, to let us know about your planned observances.

NHCHC Rally, Respite Care, and More in Media Spotlight
D.C.’s Street Sense recently highlighted the Council’s privately-funded social justice rally at #HCH2019. “It is up to everyone to demand that our rights for housing and health care be realized,” stated NCAB’s Paul Tunison, one of more than 50 activists who raised their voices for justice in D.C. Additionally, the NHCHC lent its expertise to new stories on rising homeless deaths and youth homelessness in the Voice of San Diego and Louisville Public Radio. “San Diego Homeless Deaths Doubled in the Last Decade” details a rising tide of preventable deaths and how services such as medical respite care can help address this tragedy, and “The Next Louisville” details the coordinated efforts necessary to reduce youth homelessness. The Council is always happy to provide guidance on homelessness and health care to the media: learn more.
