Long-term Goals: Planning for Your Future

In high school, your long-term goal may have been to get accepted into college. You maintained your grades, visited college campuses, and completed your applications until finally getting your admissions letter to IUP.

Now that you have accomplished that goal, it is time to start looking ahead to your future! Use this Student Guide to Setting Long-term Goals to aid in your goal-setting journey.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals: When crafting your goals, you may use the S.M.A.R.T. goals approach to give more clarity to your vision. S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Specific – specify how you will accomplish your goal.
Measurable – establish requirements for how your goal will be achieved and determine how you can measure your progress.
Attainable – ensure that your goal is realistic and action-oriented.
Relevant – ensure that your goal is addressing your needs.
Time-bound – allow a reasonable amount of time to accomplish the goal and set a deadline; breaking up your goal into smaller tasks and deadlines can increase attainability

I Have a Final Paper to Complete and Need Some Help. Where Can I Go?

Did you know the IUP Libraries and the Kathleen Jones White Writing Center are great student resources? Both can help graduate or undergraduate students throughout the writing process. Stop by the library or “Chat with a Librarian” on their website for help with library resources. When you are ready, you can schedule an appointment with the Writing Center through MyIUP.

Root for the Hawks in the IRMC Thanksgiving Classic

The IUP Men’s Basketball Team will face off in two games in this year’s IRMC Thanksgiving Classic. You can cheer on the team in person at the KCAC or by watching a live stream of the games.

On Saturday, November 25, the team will go up against St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, November 26, the Crimson Hawks will play Frostburg State at 5:00 p.m. Live stream IUP vs. St. Thomas Aquinas. Live stream IUP vs. Frostburg State.

Are you considering joining a Greek organization at IUP but have some questions? The Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Association have arranged for student leaders to answer questions that you may have about joining a Greek community. Stop into Jane E. Leonard Hall, room 225, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, to get more information about going Greek!

Heading into the Holidays as a Healthy Hawk

End the semester as a happy and healthy Hawk! Be sure to eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise, and get adequate sleep. Celebrate by practicing moderation and pacing yourself. Lastly, flu vaccines are still available at IUP Health Service. Spread cheer, not the flu, this holiday!

Elevator Speech

Your elevator speech is your 30- to 60-second introductory spiel about who you are, what you’ve done, and what you hope to accomplish. Practice yours so you can use it at a career fair, networking event, professional meet-up, or during an interview when asked to talk about yourself.

Giving Tuesday

Tuesday, November 28, is Giving Tuesday, a national effort that IUP adopted in 2017. If you or someone in your life is looking to make a gift to IUP that will impact the campus, consider donating and spreading the word about IUP’s philanthropic efforts. The IUP Student Philanthropy Club will join efforts with the Office of Annual Giving, part of the Division of University Advancement, throughout the day to raise awareness about Giving Tuesday, how gifts will impact the student experience, and networking with IUP donors.
