A New Community for Jewish Creatives
Jewish artists in Greater Boston now have a dedicated space where they can deepen their Jewish knowledge and connect with one other. Hebrew College is partnering with JArts and CJP to create the "Artist Beit Midrash," a learning salon that will bring together artists of many kinds—from visual artists to musicians and more—to study Jewish texts, share their creative processes, and build community.
Approximately 20 artists of all disciplines will be selected for the group, which will meet monthly on Zoom for facilitated discussions of ancient and modern texts and other sources, including visual art and music.
"There is so much to explore in Judaism that can enrich our lives as artists and our creative process," said Rabbi Shoshana Meira Friedman `14, co-creator and Hebrew College director of professional development.

Spring Art Show: Faith in Isolation
How does one worship alone? How have people of different religions embraced faith during this pandemic? How have sacred texts provided comfort in these times of isolation? Hebrew College’s new Arts Committee will tackle these questions in a photography show, “Isolated Faith Expressed,” curated by photographer Brenda Bancel and supported by a grant from CJP, that will open in mid-April.
Bancel’s show, which will be in-person (by appointment) and online, will be the first exhibited as part of the new Hebrew College Arts initiative, established last year to provide a visual art outlet for fostering love of Torah, social justice, pluralism, and creativity. The Arts Committee—spearheaded by Hebrew College Board of Trustees member Deborah Feinstein—selects artists whose work focuses on creative dialogue with Jewish texts.

Innovating Art, Music, and Spirituality at a Time of Challenge
How can the arts enrich our spiritual lives?
This semester, students in the Hebrew College’s Innovation Lab will try to find new answers to this question. Drawing on Jewish texts, poetry, social and organizational psychology, students will identify and implement innovative approaches to build Jewish community through music, the visual arts, sculpture, dance and social media as they focus on enhancing congregational and religious life during this unprecedented time.
“Projects have been chosen for their ability to serve as national models at a time when Jewish communities throughout North America are innovating in response to pandemic challenges and developing new approaches to artistic expression in spiritual and communal life,” said Rabbi Jeffrey Summit (above), director of the Innovation Lab.

Hebrew College Alumna Celebrates Inaugural Creative Fellows
"When we take paintbrush to canvas or pen to page, letting color flow or words spill out, opening to the surprise of what will come, we are building a relationship as well—a relationship to our own soul, to our wildness, to our intuition and imagination, and to the Creative Source that is always ready, willing, waiting to flow to us and through us whenever we allow."
— Rabbi Adina Allen`14, Remarks from Jewish Studio Project's December Siyyum, a concluding celebration for the inaugural two-year Creative Facilitator Training Program fellows

Thunder and Silence
Reflections on Parashat Yitro (Exodus 18:1-20:23) By Rabbi Jessica Kate Meyer `14, Rabbi/Chazzan, The Kitchen in San Francisco
בשעה שנתן הקב'ה את התורה

It was the hour of revelation on Mount Sinai. We were all there. We stood trembling as the mountain shook, as thunder ripped through the core of the earth.
And we heard a voice. THE VOICE. It Called to us. In 10 utterances. We heard something indescribable, earth-shattering. And we spent the next thousands of years clambering to find our way back to what we heard on that mountain.
