wednesday, october 11 The 2017 PSAT will take place on Wednesday, October 11 at Brebeuf Jesuit. This day is a special schedule for all students. Please note that registration for the PSAT is not required. Student Activities on October 11
Seniors
Senior students do not attend classes on October 11. They are instead encouraged to focus on the college selection process by visiting colleges, working on essays and catching up on their to-do lists.
Freshmen All freshmen will report to the Efroymson Auditorium no later than 8:15 a.m. for a special presentation from Todd Waites ( www.toddwaites.com). Todd Waites is a motivational speaker who will be speaking to our students about perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and pursuing dreams.
Following Mr. Waites’ presentation will be a class community service opportunity with Riley Hospital which will take place here at Brebeuf from 9:45-10:30 a.m.. Freshmen will conclude their day with a teambuilding exercise from 10:45-11:45 a.m.. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. and must be picked up outside of the gymnasium in order not to disrupt the PSAT. We are excited to welcome Todd Waites and look forward to an engaging morning of service and activities for the class of 2021.
Sophomores and Juniors
Sophomore and junior students must report to their PSAT testing room no later than 8:10 a.m. and bring a No. 2 pencil and calculator.
The testing schedule with locations has been posted throughout the school building and is also available by clicking here.
Students testing under standard time will be dismissed from school no later than 12:00 p.m. Students testing with accommodations should be dismissed from school by 1:30 p.m.
PSAT Pre-Administration Sessions
In preparation for the PSAT, all sophomores and juniors must attend a mandatory pre-administration session on one of the following dates in the Efroymson Auditorium: - October 4 - 11:10 a.m., 12:50 p.m., or 3:30 p.m.
- October 5 - 9:15 a.m.
- October 6 - 1:35 p.m.
The pre-administration sessions will take approximately 40 minutes and the PSAT Student Guides will be distributed to students during this time. Students should show up to the session that works best with their schedule.

october 10-11 Parent-Teacher Conferences at Brebeuf Jesuit are designed to keep parents informed about their child's progress, answer questions, and further develop a plan for a student's future. Please see below for more information and scheduling details. PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE DETAILS
WHERE Parent-Teacher Conferences will again take place in the East and West gyms. However, please note that the Learning Center teachers will be in the Learning Center. WHEN Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, October 10 from 3:40 p.m. to 7:40 p.m., and Wednesday, October 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. WHAT TO EXPECT On Friday, September 22, parents received an email from Jen LaMaster, Assistant Principal. This email contained instructions for how to log on to the online parent-teacher conference scheduler as well as a copy of your child’s schedule. Some Important Notes: - Parents will be allowed to log on and schedule conferences anytime up until Friday, October 6. Conference registration will close on that date.
- Parents are encouraged to schedule conference times with as many teachers as they wish.
- During both parent-teacher conference dates, Jen LaMaster will be at the gym lobby desk and available to assist families or access schedules.
- If you arrive without a scheduled appointment with a particular teacher, there may be the opportunity for walk-up conferences, depending on that teacher’s timing of scheduled appointments. Teachers available for walk-up conferences will have a green table tent to indicate free time.
- We always welcome communication with our families. if you are unable to attend this event or cannot find a time taht works with your schedule, please feel free to contact a teacher directly. Teachers will respond to requests within one business day to set up a mutually convenient time for a phone call or face-to-face meeting.

student health and wellness presentations during parent-teacher conferencesAll parents are invited to join Principal Greg VanSlambrook, Assistant Principal Stephanie Medcalfe, Director of Academic Counseling Christina Rhodes, and School Social Worker Libby Pollak for information and discussion about student health and wellness at Brebeuf Jesuit. In the spring of 2017, all Brebeuf students took our school-wide health & wellness survey. It was our second year administering this survey, which is part of Brebeuf Jesuit’s partnership with Dr. Suniya Luthar, from Arizona State University, who is a leading expert in the field of youth mental health. As we did a year ago, we’d like to give parents an opportunity to hear about the survey results, what Brebeuf is doing in this area, and discuss how we can best support our students as partners in school and at home. We are offering three identical sessions during the Parent-Teacher Conference days. We invite you to attend any one of them, when your appointment schedule with your child’s teachers allows. We will have a 15-minute presentation followed by 30 minutes for discussion. The session options are as follows, all held in the Chapel, and no RSVP or registration required. - Tuesday, October 10, 3:00-3:45 p.m.

Loves About Brebeuf I love the people. Everyone at Brebeuf including classmates, staff, and especially the teachers all make the school so special. Brebeuf truly offers such a welcoming and strong sense of community. Also, the schedule is pretty awesome! Favorite Class I couldn’t choose only one. My favorite classes have been AP Physics with Mr. Rott, AP Macro with Mr. Tague and Theatre III with Mr. Strader! Each class has been a completely different experience because of the coursework and the teacher, but they have all been equally amazing. Future Plans I plan on attending Indiana University and studying International Business and Accounting. After college, I hope to live in a country outside of the United States and visit every continent (including Antarctica!) Teams & Co-Curriculars Cross Country

How I Met Your Mother will always be one of my favorites. However, my current favorites are definitely That 70’s Show and Freaks and Geeks. If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I would love to go to Italy, Laos, and Australia. Ever since I was a child I have wanted to live in Australia. I am lucky to have been to France and Spain and I think that the countries on the Mediterranean are beautiful and Italy seems so wonderful. I want to go to Laos because I would love to see the culture and the beauty of a country that is so different from the United States. What advice would you offer our newest Braves in the Class of 2021? Be friendly! High school goes by super quickly so be nice to everyone. You never know who will end up being one of your closest friends. You will be spending the next four years with these classmates so you might as well be friends with everyone!

Congratulations to Shivam Bhargava and Jack Miller of the Class of 2018 for being selected as Brebeuf’s nominees for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This prestigious scholarship is based on four criteria: leadership, scholarship, moral force of character, and physical vigor. After a rigorous selection process, 20% of nominees will advance to the next round. The scholarship covers four years of tuition, room & board, fees, summer programs, and research opportunities. We support Shivam and Jack enthusiastically in their endeavors!
Practice PSAT hosted by The Princeton Review
We had 126 sophomores and juniors take the Practice PSAT on Saturday, September 23! The tests are being graded this week and students will receive an email from The Princeton Review on Friday with information about their test. For those students that registered, but were unable to attend, an email will be sent to you with a link to an online practice test.

Emerging Scholars at the CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (CLD)
The Center for Leadership Development (CLD) in partnership with its college and university partners offers over $2 million in scholarships to high school seniors! To qualify and apply for CLD Partner Scholarships, students MUST successfully complete the Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Project (SDCE) and College Prep programs prior to senior year. The Indiana Latino Institute will host the 4th Annual Indiana Latino Education Summit on Higher Education on November 9, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the JW Marriott. Bloom Project, Inc. and the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males presents Kings Feast Symposium Indy 2017 at the Indiana Government Center, South on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. This event will have a college and career fair, workshops for young men, their parents, and professional males, plus a networking luncheon and much, much more. Purdue University’s Windows of Opportunity for Women in Technology (WOWiT) will take place on Saturday, September 30 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The day will be spent immersing young women in the departments and majors that are moving the world forward. Parents and students go through their own “track” throughout the day, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends with an optional tour of the Purdue campus at 4:00 p.m. Register online as soon as possible by clicking here. Special Programs
Case Western Reserve University is currently accepting student applications for their Diversity Overnight, November 12 and 13. Applications are due Monday, October 2. Diversity Overnight is designed for smart and curious high school seniors from diverse backgrounds, to give them an in-depth look at the opportunities available to our students. Case Western Reserve will cover the cost of meals and lodging for students accepted to this program. To apply, please click here.
The IU Groups Scholars Program provides academic, financial and social support to selected underrepresented Indiana resident college students. The Groups Scholars Program admits more than 300 students yearly and has an alumni roster of close to 12,000 individuals.
An eligible IU Groups student must be a resident of Indiana, a U.S. citizen or have a green card, meet minimum academic course requirements, have limited financial resources (please see specific income eligibility requirements within linked student information packet), have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, have a minimum SAT of 750 (by Oct. 7) or ACT of 15 (by Sept. 9), and file the FAFSA (recommended by November 1) for income verification.

Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management has had an undergraduate program called the Business Opportunity Program (BOP) since 1968. BOP’s mission is to recruit underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds who have excelled in high school and want to pursue a business degree from the Krannert School. The program starts with a 8-week summer session prior to freshman year and provides services and support to participants throughout their undergraduate years. Belize Service Immersion Trip May 30 - June 10, 2018 Applications are now available for the 2018 Belize trip.
Students will lead middle school retreats in Mayan villages, visit the Tikal Mayan Ruins, attend a Belizean high school, share life with local families, learn Garifuna drumming and dancing, jump off cliffs, explore caves, snorkel in the world's 2nd largest Barrier Reef, and more.

IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages Since 1962, Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL) has been providing to Indiana high school language learners the opportunity to experience language and cultural immersion through summer study-abroad programs. IUHPFL students attend 5- or 6-week programs every June and July in eight countries - Austria, Canada, Chile, China, France, Japan, Mexico, and Spain - learning Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
IUHPFL’s combination of intensive academic instruction, a mandatory Language Commitment to speak only in the target language while abroad, and full-time integration into a host family, allows for students to participate in a total immersion experience.
Prospective applicants must be in level 3 or higher of the language to which they are applying at the time of application to IUHPFL. For Chinese students, they must be in level 2 or higher at the time of application. Sophomores may apply to IUHPFL, but it is important to note that high school juniors and seniors are given priority for selection.
Students who are interested in applying must register between now and November 15 on the IUHPFL website found here.
