Science in Singapore: The Duke/Duke-NUS Research Exchange Program
In 2005, a graduate medical school was born from a new partnership between Duke University and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Duke-NUS offers a joint Duke/Duke-NUS degree for those pursuing an MD, as well as PhD and Masters degrees awarded by NUS. It is also home to cutting edge biomedical research under its Signature Research Programs launched in 2007. Basic research spans areas such as Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, Neuroscience, and Infectious Disease, and ten clinical research centers further integrate research training and learning at Duke-NUS.
The Office of Duke-NUS Affairs represents Duke-NUS on Duke’s campus in Durham. This unit coordinates administrative support for all collaborative programs among Duke, Duke-NUS, and SingHealth. Initiatives include research grants, faculty and student development opportunities, and educational exchanges, with the goal of providing learning experiences and expanding the academic missions at Duke and in Singapore.
The Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Research Exchange Program allows trainees to conduct research abroad, broaden research training, and experience different research environments and cultures. Past Duke trainees, with the guidance of their PIs, have leveraged the Exchange Program to forge new collaborations, learn novel techniques, and conduct experiments unique to Duke-NUS.
PhD students in School of Medicine programs who have passed their preliminary exam at Duke are eligible for the exchange program, which uses a competitive application. Awards fund economy class air travel, accommodation up to 30 days, per diem for food and local travel, and transport to/from airports. Stipend support is not covered and is expected to be continued from the trainee’s originating institution.
Applications for the Duke/Duke-NUS Exchange Program are due in the Fall (usually November) and fund visits between January and December of the following year. This year’s application announcement will be distributed soon, and OBGE will forward the information to all SOM PhD students and their PhD programs. Queries about the Exchange Program can be addressed to Senior Associate Dean Silke Vogel at Duke-NUS (silke.vogel@duke-nus.edu.sg) or Associate Dean for Research Training Beth Sullivan at Duke (beth.sullivan@duke.edu).

CAGT Travel Award
We are excited to announce the brand new CAGT Travel Award. This funding award is offered by Duke University’s Center for Advanced Genomic Technologies (CAGT), and is for current trainees, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who seek an opportunity to extend the scope and impact of their research by learning new methods or technologies and bringing that expertise back to Duke. Successful candidates will identify a collaborator at another research institution that is committed to hosting and training the visitor. Following this experience, candidates should be able to continue their research with ongoing collaboration. Through this funding award, the CAGT aims to establish a strong global network of collaborators and increase the speed and flexibility with which new methods and technologies can be established by Duke research labs. Awardees will receive financial support to visit the proposed collaborator for a brief period (e.g. 1 week) to initiate the collaboration. The proposed research training may be new to the applicant or an extension of the applicant’s prior research.
Please refer to our website: https://cagt.pratt.duke.edu/cagt-travel-award
Deadline to Apply: September 29, 2023
Notice of Award: November 1, 2023
Funds Expire: December 4, 2024

Precision Genomics Collaboratory
We are pleased to announce the 3rd annual School of Medicine Genomics Scientific Retreat hosted by the Precision Genomics Collaboratory. This day-long retreat will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, in the Trent Semans Center Great Hall.
Our keynote speakers are Sarah Tishkoff, PhD, David and Lyn Silfen University Professor in genetics and biology at the University of Pennsylvania; and Geoff Ginsburg, MD, PhD, Chief Medical and Scientific Officers for the All of Us research program.
Sarah Tishkoff, PhD, studies genomic and phenotypic variation in ethnically diverse Africans. Her research combines field work, laboratory research, and computational methods to examine African population history and how genetic variation can affect a wide range of traits – for example, why humans have different susceptibility to disease, how they metabolize drugs, and how they adapt through evolution.
Geoff Ginsburg, MD, PhD, is the chief medical and scientific officer of the All of Us Research Program at the National Institutes of Health. He leads the Division of Medical and Scientific Research and is responsible for helping to set the scientific vision and strategy for the program. He also oversees the program’s collection and curation of data and integration of new data types to support a wide range of impactful scientific discoveries.
