United Way Presents 2019 Capita Award


United Way of the Capital Region recently presented the 2019 Joseph M. Capita Spirit of the Capital Region Award to John McHenry, president and CEO of Goodwill Keystone Area, for his incredible impact on our community.

The award recognizes an exceptional community partner or corporate citizen for superlative acts of community engagement and measurable impact in the health, education and betterment of our regional community.

United Way Awards Raffle Prizes to Lucky Donors


United Way of the Capital Region’s “prize patrol” recently surprised five donors at their workplaces to give out raffle prizes from the 2018 campaign.

PNC employee Frank Sajer was surprised with the keys to a brand-new Chevrolet Trax, courtesy of Turner Automotive Group.

Ted Herold, Brown Schultz Sheridan & Fritz employee, won $2,000 gift card for Wolf Furniture.

Rite Aid Corporation employee Teri Schanck received a getaway package valued at $1,500 courtesy of AAA Central Penn.

Capital BlueCross employee Bob Grochalski won $1,500 worth of gift cards from Giant Food Stores.

Dennis Nornhold, employee of Gannett Fleming, won a $1,000 VISA gift card courtesy of Encompass Health Rehab Hospital of Mechanicsburg.

Donors who gave $182 or more to United Way’s 2018 campaign were eligible to win one of five prizes: a 2019 Chevrolet Trax, donated by Turner Automotive Group; a $2,000 gift card from Wolf Furniture; a $1,500 getaway courtesy of AAA Central Penn; $1,500 in groceries donated by Giant Food Stores and a $1,000 gift card courtesy of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Mechanicsburg.

Money in Your Pocket Program Helps Increase Income for Local Families


Money in Your Pocket (MIYP), a program that helps low- and moderate-income working families and individuals better utilize state and federal tax credit programs, returned $4.66 million to local families this year. 

The program operated 16 sites in Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Juniata and Mifflin counties that were staffed by 272 volunteers who served as free tax preparers, quality reviewers and site coordinators. A total of 4,642 returns were electronically filed. 

MIYP is a partnership of several community organizations, with United Way of the Capital Region serving as the lead agency. Financial support for the program was provided by PNC and U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

More Than 200 Local Teens Clean Up City Island for Youth Day of Caring


More than 200 local high school students recently volunteered as part of United Way of the Capital Region’s 17th Annual Youth Day of Caring.
 
Volunteers completed painting, clean-up and landscaping projects throughout Harrisburg City Island to prepare the park for the spring season. 

Juniors and seniors from the following 10 high schools participated: Bishop McDevitt, Camp Hill, Central Dauphin East, Commonwealth Charter Academy, Cougar Academy, John Harris, Middletown, Red Land, SciTech and Susquehanna Township.

Members of United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society served as volunteer project leaders and chaperones. The Bridges Society connects a diverse group of emerging leaders through giving and volunteering.
