Message from Superintendent Sicoli
Governor Walz has ordered the state’s public schools to remain closed for the remainder of the academic year to limit the spread of COVID-19. This means that distance learning will continue until June 9 for all Roseville Area Schools, except Harambee, which will continue distance learning through at least June 30. Please note that there will not be distance learning on Friday, May 1, and Monday, May 4. Additionally, the Minnesota State High School League canceled the spring athletics and fine arts season.
I expect this news is disappointing to most of you. This is not how the last three months of any of our students' year was supposed to go. I want you all to know that I share in your sadness of this loss. Schools are designed to bring students and adults together in a connected learning community. The separation from our buildings and from each other has been unsettling for us all.
For our seniors, I believe that the governor was right when he said yesterday that the class of 2020 will not be defined by staying home and missing proms and missing graduations, but will instead be defined by understanding how interconnected our world is and what it means to come together and solve hard problems.
I extend my appreciation to our students, families and staff who have been doing everything they can to make the best of the situation. Students and teachers are connecting in different ways and learning together through distance learning. It’s been heartening to see our school community extending so much support, encouragement and grace to our students and staff this past month. It’s clear that we all miss each other, and we appreciate everyone’s best efforts during these trying times.
I am sure many of you have questions about what the remainder of a virtual school year will look like for our students, including questions about end-of-year traditions and celebrations like graduation. At this point, we just don’t have all the information we will need to provide those answers. But please know that we are already working on ways to address these questions and more. We will continue to keep you updated through these messages, and through messages directly from your students' schools.
Thank you for your extraordinary patience and understanding.
Aldo Sicoli
