Organized Labor Takes to the Field for United Way

On Sunday, August 23, union members and their families helped United Way of the Capital Region kick off its 2015 fundraising campaign at a Harrisburg Senators game. Hosted by Capital BlueCross and the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council, the event was an outstanding show of support for labor and United Way!

Jerry Oleksiak, Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) president, threw out the first pitch and Denise Fahie of SEIU Chapter 668 sang the national anthem. Delegates from the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council gathered on the field to present campaign endorsements and union treasury gifts to Tim Fatzinger, United Way of the Capital Region president and CEO.

For more than 60 years, organized labor and United Way of the Capital Region have worked together to improve the quality of life in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.

Labor Volunteers Promote Children’s Safety at Kipona Festival

The Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council’s Community Service Committee teamed up with United Steel Workers, Local 668 and the City of Harrisburg to sponsor a children’s safety booth at the Kipona Festival at Harrisburg’s River Front Park over Labor Day weekend.

Nineteen labor and community volunteers, along with super hero Captain America, distributed safe reflecting trick-or-treat bags, Frisbees and anti-bullying guides to the kids. Adults received NFL football schedules and voter registration forms. Special thanks to all who supported this event!

Want to volunteer for a future event? Contact Karen Overly Smith at 724.4060 or e-mail her at ksmith@uwcr.org for more information.

Volunteers Needed to Help Working Families with Tax Preparation

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they have earned. No previous experience is required and training is provided.

In tax year 2014, 230 volunteers provided free income tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families as part of the Money In Your Pocket (MIYP) campaign, a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. Nationally the effort is known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA. Volunteers filed 5,246 tax returns, resulting in more than $5.2 million returned to local families. This helped individuals and families increase their income by an average of six percent.

Volunteers will offer tax preparation services at designated sites in the Capital Region from January 28 through April 15 during day and evening hours. Volunteers will receive training to prepare computerized, electronic returns. MIYP also needs volunteers to serve as greeters, which requires only one hour of online training.

Informational sessions will be held at the following locations for those interested in learning more about the program:
