Athletics Open House is 10/29!
October 2020
A Message from the Athletic Director
Future Friars:
Leadership, Excellence and Tradition! These are three words that you will hear early and often as a Fenwick student-athlete. Everything we do in athletics should reinforce what your parents try and teach you at home while pushing you to be your best in and out of school.  As a member of a Fenwick athletic team, you will be encouraged to lead in both word and action.

Excellence is an expectation at Fenwick. Our teachers, coaches and parents will work collectively to help you become the best version of yourself. We expect our kids to think big, set goals and work everyday to accomplish them.

Finally, Fenwick’s tradition is second to none. The hallways of Fenwick are filled with stories, memories and people that went on to accomplish big things! We are looking forward to the next generation of Friars that will build on our strong tradition.

The Fenwick Athletics Newsletter (FAN) will provide a glimpse of the leadership, excellence and tradition that exists at Fenwick High School today!

GO FRIARS!
Mr. Thies

Boys and Girls' Cross Country will compete in Regionals on Saturday, October 24th!
Girls' Golf won its Regional last week, coming in first ahead of St. Ignatius by 16 strokes. "Fenwick had three of the Top 5 scores," reports Coach Mike Trankina, "and we had our four qualifying scores all within the Top 12." Lillian Bateman finished 3rd with an 82 for 18 holes. The top medalists were a tie with an 81. Jojo Wiktor shot 83 and Kathryn Sweeney shot 84. "And our final two spots -- Blaire Lepore and Maeve McEnery -- have both been posting very good scores and providing a nice safety net for the others to be more aggressive," coach adds. Next up are Sectionals on Tuesday, October 13, at Arlington Lakes. GO FRIARS!

COACHES CORNER:
Friar Lacrosse Teams Are on the Fast Track!

Dan Applebaum
Tracy Bonaccorsi
Two new LAX coaches have lofty visions for the Friars’ boys and girls programs in 2021 and beyond.
It should come as no surprise that lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. The sport’s participation numbers have been on the rise for the better part a decade. Nationally, more than 210,000 high school student-athletes now played organized lacrosse (as of 2018), according to statistics tracked by the National Federation of High School Associations. Some 113,000 of those participants were boys, while nearly 97,000 were girls. At the youth level, more than 825,000 children age 13 and under now play “LAX,” reports US Lacrosse.

“Lacrosse is a great game,” attests new Fenwick Boys’ Head Coach Dan Applebaum, who grew up in Oak Park, IL, playing baseball as a kid since the age of six. Applebaum worked at New Wave Lacrosse in Naperville and assisted the staffs at Oak Park-River Forest (his alma mater) as well as Lyons Township high schools in La Grange. He was a Friars’ varsity assistant coach for several seasons before accepting the boys’ head coaching job at Northside College Prep in Chicago (2018-19). Athletic Director Scott Thies ’99 tapped Applebaum as the Fenwick boys’ head coach last year.
