Greetings, Volunteers!

Spring is here at last and we're heading into events season with more opportunities to get involved each month! Sign up to volunteer directly with Garbage to Garden or one of our community partners:

To sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email and we will help answer any questions you may have. Then simply send confirmation of your volunteer hours to volunteer@garbagetogarden.org to receive credit.

Zero-Waste Events 

Join staff and other volunteers at Thompson's Point for the Associated Buyers Food Expo: monitor waste stations and sort compost, recycling, and trash to ensure maximum diversion from landfills.

Shifts:

Tuesday, April 11th

11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm, 3pm-5pm

Wednesday, April 12th

10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, 4pm-6pm

Earth Day Composting 
In celebration of our new partnership with the City of Portland and other sustainable efforts, the City is hosting an Earth Day event in Payson Park. We will be providing our zero-waste and event composting services and need volunteers to help monitor waste stations.
Saturday, April 22
Shifts: 9:30am-11:30am
11:30am-1:30pm
Help fill Compost Bags!
Compost bagging happens weekly on 
Monday and Wednesday mornings 
at our shop in Portland (as long as it is not raining). Come lend a hand for ~1.5 hours in exchange for one month of free service! Arrive anytime 9am-11am. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty!

Outreach in Gorham, Windham & Sanford!
We have started curbside composting service into Gorham, Windham, and Sanford and need help spreading the word! 
If you are interested in canvassing and doorhanging in these communities, let us know! Have friends, family and colleagues in these communities? Don't forget, you can also earn free service through our referral program –– so spread the word! 
Portland Parks Conservancy
Do you love spending time outside and meeting new people? Volunteer with Portland Parks Conservancy and help protect local, vibrant parks!

Woodfords Corner Farmers Market
Friends of Woodfords Corner is seeking volunteers for a new market in town! Help set-up, break-down, and run the market, which will be held Thursday afternoons from 3pm - 7pm from the first week in June through the first week in October (after Labor Day, market hours will be 2 - 7 pm).
Shifts: 2pm - 5pm, 5pm - 8pm
Attend a 
volunteer information meeting on Thursday 5/4 at 6:30pm.

The market will be located at Woodfords Congregational Church, in a portion of their parking lot. Questions can be directed to farmersmarket@woodfordscorner.org.
The Locker Project
The Locker Project provides children and families at risk of hunger with reliable access to healthy food. At the warehouse, volunteers sort produce and pack bags to be distributed through the schools. At fresh food events, volunteers help arrange produce and assist children and parents with bagging the foods they choose. If you have never volunteered for the Locker Project before, please fill out the form on the website here.

Maine Needs
Maine Needs volunteers fulfill requests from caseworkers, teachers, in-home visiting nurses, and community organizers on behalf of their clients. Shifts may involve organizing and sorting donations, fulfilling requests and assembling packages, or even deliveries!
Current shifts:
Monday-Saturday 9am-12pm
Tuesday 9am-7pm
Wednesday & Thursday 9am-3pm
 

Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition 
MIRC is currently looking for volunteers to help with their Culturally-Appropriate Food Program supporting homeless asylum seekers at the motels. Volunteers help with packaging hot meals 6 days a week: 
Monday-Friday from 4:15pm-6:15pm
Saturday from 3pm-5pm
Partners for World Health
Partners for World Health collects medical supplies that healthcare facilities in the U.S. are required to discard and ship them to countries in need. In addition, they also organize medical missions to Southeast Asia and Africa for doctors, nurses, and students.

We are currently looking for drivers to help us with our donation collection. We ask that anyone interested in this please connect with us for next steps. This does involve some heavy lifting as well as being comfortable driving a van or a box truck.
