MVA Partners and Supporters,
Thank you for subscribing to our monthly newsletter, where we share updates and stories of interest from the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance and our broader community.
The MVA exists because Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center share a commitment to high-quality health sciences education, innovative biomedical research, and improving the health of our community. This past month's U.S. supreme court rulings are likely to exacerbate health disparities, disproportionately threatening the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
We are committed to ensuring that our collaborative initiatives evolve to take on such challenges. We hope you will continue to learn, educate, and engage with us!

| URBAN HOUSING SOLUTIONS:
DR. TIFFANY DAVIS
|
Our Community Partner Spotlight features organizations that work with the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) to eliminate health disparities in the communities they serve.
Last month, on a hot afternoon, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) attended a community event at Mercury North. Tiffany Davis, Ed.D., M.A, service coordinator at Urban Housing Solutions (UHS), spoke to the MVA about the event, the mission of UHS and services they offer.
As Nashville’s largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing, Dr. Davis says, “We are constantly buying, building, and remodeling properties to try to meet the needs of all people.” At present, UHS has over forty properties in Davidson County.

MEHARRY/ VANDERBILT/ TSU CANCER PARTNERSHIP CAB ATTENDS ASCO '22
|
Since 1999, the Meharry Medical College/ Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center/ Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership (MVTCP) has engaged in interdisciplinary basic sciences, clinical and cancer control activities focused on addressing the disproportionate cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality in minority and underserved populations.
Earlier this month, three MVTCP Community Advisory Board (CAB) members attended the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago.
ASCO is a professional organization representing physicians of all oncology sub-specialties who care for people with cancer. In addition to over 200 scheduled sessions, the ASCO meeting features poster presentations and hundreds of company exhibitions.
CAB Co-Chair Ila McDermott was amazed by the experience. Her favorite part was visiting the Patient Advocate Resource Center, where she was able to commune with other patient advocates.
Husband and wife CAB members Reggie and Wyntress Patterson also enjoyed the conference and look forward to sharing resources, such as new trends in the research of cancer prevention and treatment, with rest of the CAB.
The Pattersons and Ms. McDermott all express how gratifying it is to see the MVTCP’s research and their own involvement with the CAB as part of a wider oncology community.

| DR. CHRISTIAN KETEL:
BUILDING BRIDGES TO COMPASSIONATE HEALTH CARE
|
Our Faculty Spotlight celebrates the institutional partners who make the vital connections that drive the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance’s (MVA) collaborative learning environment.
Christian Ketel, DNP, RN, FNAP, found his calling in the nursing profession early in life. After working mostly behind the scenes the past decade to improve patient health outcomes, Dr. Ketel describes being “thrust” into the community. “It turned out to be a match made in heaven,” he says. “The community work, being out in public, engaging with people and community partners—I love it!”
Earlier this year, the National Academies of Practice (NAP) announced the election of Dr. Ketel as a Distinguished Nursing Fellow.
