We're praying for our community as school starts!

Welcome Back!

It's here! The calendar says we still have about four months left in 2023, but most of us who have or work with students think primarly about the new year starting today with the return to classes, and for good reason. After weeks of being scattered, we're regathering for school, extracurriculars, and everything else that scattered, curtailed, or wound down for the summer.

This past Sunday as we discussed the impending school year it made me happy to hear students say that while they weren't thrilled about school starting they were ready to get back to routine youth activities like Engage. We've got a lot this year to be excited about, and this month's newsletter is primarily about emphasizing the first three dates we have coming up: Promotion Sunday, our annual end of summer Christmas party, and the back to school meeting where we'll lay out the rest of the academic year.

As we'll discuss more the next two Sundays at Promotion Sunday and the Back to School Meeting, this year's spiritual formation theme will focus on going into the world to live out our calling in Christ. Our youth go, and go a lot. We all do. Hecticness is something we can't get rid of, but we can be intentional about how and where we're going. I hope these first events we'll set the tone for prioritizing our faith as we go throughout the year and all the many places it takes us. Start marking those calendars now, and I hope to see you as we start the new year together!

Fall Sunday School

With school starting back and vacations ending, we'll be back to junior and senior high Sunday School classes starting this Sunday, August 6 at 9:30am!

Some of our middle schoolers asked about Moses as a topic they were interested in during their spiritual formation time in Panama City, so this fall we'll all be reading through Exodus together. This is a great opportunity for our youth to gather with their most immediate peers within the youth ministry to read Scripture in a conversational group setting, practicing the kind of Bible reading skills that can walk with them through the rest of their lives. We hope even more of our youth make Sunday School the start of their week in 2023-2024!

Dates to Know

August 6: Promotion Sunday, 9:30am--Our newly-minted 9th graders will move up to the high school class and we'll all start our semester reading of Exodus together.

August 6: "Can't Wait 'Til Christmas" Party, 4-6:30pm--Break out the tacky Christmas gear, bring a snack to share, and pretend school is already out for winter break as our mosaic gains a new alumni signature! Note the non-typical Sunday evening time due to working with kids ministry event schedules.

August 13: Back to School Meeting, 5:30-7:30pm--Parents/guardians, please make plans to join us for this important start to the school year! It's special when we can get all of us together for fellowship, and we also have some events to announce and others to plan together so bring your calendars and your enthusiasm! If you need childcare in order to attend, please let Geoff know by Tuesday, August 8.

August 20: First regular Engage of the year, 5:30-7:30pm--Engage is the central event of the PHUMC Youth regular calendar, a time set aside specially for our youth to welcome, grow, serve, and celebrate together.
