2025 Presidential Employee Service Award recipients announced |
The recipients of the 2025 Presidential Employee Service Awards are Robert Mills, a solid waste technician with Landscaping on the main campus in Radford, and Haley Bechtel, an administrative assistant with the Highlander Success Center at Radford University Carilion in Roanoke.
-
Robert Mills has served Radford University for nearly five decades, quietly setting the gold standard for excellence in service. Known for meticulous attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols and an unwavering work ethic, Robert ensures that sanitation and recycling operations run smoothly and efficiently every day.
Beyond routine responsibilities, he goes the extra mile – retrieving lost student items, supporting colleagues across departments and proactively addressing campus needs. This kind of leadership-by-example, commitment to quality and humble dedication have made a lasting impact on campus life and operations.
-
Haley Bechtel has consistently gone above and beyond in a time of transition and growing demands at Radford University Carilion. She is quietly becoming the glue that holds multiple departments together. Supporting a diverse group of 24 faculty and staff across two colleges, she manages everything from lab supply chains to budget oversight, event coordination and student supervision.
When the lab manager’s position unexpectedly became vacant just weeks into her role, she stepped in without hesitation. For 18 months, she oversaw complex biomedical and medical laboratory science supply orders – many requiring specific handling – ensuring no disruption to teaching or research. Now, she is training the new lab manager, continuing to serve with leadership and grace. Her problem-solving mindset, team spirit and tireless work ethic have uplifted colleagues and empowered students. Academic and administrative operations have thrived under her care.
Congratulations to both Robert and Haley from the entire Radford University community, and thank you for your commitment to excellence.

Radford University earns 2025-2026 Military Friendly School – Gold distinction |
Radford University has earned the 2025-2026 Military Friendly School – Gold designation.
The honor comes from Military Friendly, a brand created by the advocacy organization VIQTORY to promote civilian opportunities for veterans. Its ratings program began in 2003 as a vehicle to encourage civilian organizations to invest in programs to recruit, retain and advance veterans as employees, entrepreneurs and students.
| | |
“Radford University is thrilled to again be recognized by VIQTORY as a gold-level Military Friendly School and to have them recognize us as one of only two of the 10 public or private four-year institutions in the commonwealth to be recognized at that level,” said Bill Wilson, director of Radford’s Military Resource Center. “We are proud to continue to serve our military-affiliated students, help grow that population and receive this recognition.”
Visit Radford University’s Military Resource Center website for more information about student veteran programs.
