Dear UACS families,


How time flies! This week we are excited to bring you some highlights from our UACS virtual enrichment programming, and want to remind everyone who is eligible and able to please make sure you're registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election and have a voting plan! See the bottom of this newsletter for resources on voting in Philadelphia. For our programming, we are still enrolling students, and you can find more information on site-based virtual programming in this newsletter, too.

Producer's Club Highlight! 
Special Guest Schay Glover taught a family drawing class for Comegys & Lea UACS families last Friday. It was a blast learning to draw cartoon animals! Many thanks to Coach R, the Producer's Club & Mr. Glover for making this wonderful opportunity possible!

Friday Highlight!
This past Friday, learners were taught to write in hieroglyphics like ancient Egyptians during the Let's Explore the World with Ms. Barbara and Ms. Cheryl. Pictures below, left. 

During Healthy Snack Time with Mrs. Davis, learners made traditional and healthy rice crispy treats. Believe it or not, the healthy rice crispy treats received more likes than the traditional! Pictures below, right.

City-Wide Updates

This year has been tragic for many reasons, and principal among them in Philadelphia is an increase in gun violence. Many cities across the country are seeing end-of-year spikes in gun violence, and the city of Philadelphia maintains that just one shooting is too many. To maintain a sense of urgency around this public health crisis, the city has deployed a variety of strategies to combat gun violence. Click below to read more.

Penn Updates

While this year has been exceptionally challenging, it has also showcased the bravery, resilience, and compassion of indviduals and groups who take it upon themselves to rise up in times of need. This week we are highlighting Penn Today's spotlight on "Side Gigs for Good," including a family’s quest to add diversity to a bone marrow registry, a professor who fostered kittens when volunteers were scarce, and a scholar assisting asylum-seekers by acting as a translator. School District of Philadelphia Updates

This Tuesday, October 20th from 4-5pm, join the SDP and special guests Gail Carter-Hamilton from the 

Philadelphia Department of Public Health and Dr. David Rubin & Dr. Susan Coffin from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to discuss the latest COVID-19 updates in the city and how the district is working to support safe schools and communities.
