The first day of summer is just around the corner, and the last day of school isn't too far behind for many families. If you’re like me, this time of year is a mixed bag. Sure, summer’s unscheduled, lazy pace is freeing, but it's daunting, too, especially for working parents.

I’m counting on toys and games that are best played with friends to keep my kids busy in the backyard. And rediscovering favorite spots that don’t cost a thing — such as Discovery Park and the Sammamish Animal Sanctuary — is one more way we'll find order in our otherwise free-form summer. Beyond that, I’m winging it and hoping for the best.
