Green Tip
Please enjoy the following eco-friendly tidbit brought to you by Friends of the Environment:
Two bills addressing climate change through composting were signed into law by Governor Polis on May 17. The first bill will help reduce compost contamination by prohibiting false marketing practices of “look-alike” compostable products that mislead consumers into believing a product is compostable. This bill also creates standards for compostable products and requires a certification by a recognized, independent, third-party verification group that the product is compostable. The second bill mandates a state Organics Diversion Study that will help the state and local governments understand the policies, tools, infrastructure, and end markets needed to divert food, yard trimmings, and other organics from landfills. These two new laws demonstrate the value Colorado puts into composting.
*All cups, lids, plates, bowls, utensils and straws etc. are compostable at the Ranch House!
Featured Photo
This week's featured photo shows a friendly neighborhood fox taking a nap under a pine tree near a statue of St. Francis in Vicki Arnold's front yard. We love that this little guy feels at home in our neighborhood. Thank you Vicki for sharing this special moment in time with us!
We'd like to feature your picture in an upcoming newsletter. If you're interested in having your photo highlighted in the weekly news, please submit images to: jessica.hennessy@rvrma.org.
Time is Up! Deer Fencing Must Come Down
This year we added two weeks to the deer fencing deadline and we hope this has allowed owners a more flexible time frame to help protect their valuable landscape from local mule deer population. The deer fencing removal deadline was officially May 31. It is now time to remove all deer fencing from your property.
Please remember that when you remove your deer fencing, it must be stored off-site, indoors, or in such a manner that it is not visible from adjacent properties, the golf course and RVR streets or paths and common areas.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side
“Dandelions:  a love/hate relationship” by Donna Chase, Master Naturalist for the Forest Conservancy
A member of the Sunflower Family, this Genus (Taraxacum) has many species and is found on almost every continent on earth.  Loved by most, hated by others, it was introduced to North America from Europe as a cultivated food crop. All parts of the plant are edible and have been used for food, wine, medicine, a coffee alternative etc. Fossil seeds from the Pliocene epoch have been discovered. Dandelions are most common in disturbed areas (fields, lawns, roadsides) where they grow rapidly and reproduce quickly by pollination, asexual reproduction (without pollination) or underground runners.  A single plant can produce 5000 seeds/year which are carried by wind on fine hairs to distant locations.  Dandelions are mentioned in the Bible and in Shakespeare sonnets.  Plants are considered Noxious Weeds in some National Parks (i.e. Denali National Park hosts an annual “Dandelion Demolition”). The common name comes from “dent de lion” (lion’s tooth) which refers to the edge of the leaves.
FYI:  the term “weed” has no botanical significance. The term is completely subjective though it is often used to describe any plant that grows and reproduces aggressively, “a plant considered undesirable in a particular site.”
The term “Noxious Weed” is designated by the USDA as any plant that is “injurious to public health, agriculture, recreation, wildlife or property.” The term invasive is often used interchangeably though invasive plants are always non-native (introduced) and is described as having a “negative impact” on native plants.  (There are plants that are non-native but not invasive or noxious.) Obviously, there is some overlap in terms!
A very handy booklet “Noxious Weeds of Colorado” is available online from the Colorado Weed Management Association.
RVR Hiking Group
New hiking group for the RVR community! We hike every Monday, unless weather doesn’t cooperate.
Suggested items to bring include sunscreen, a hat, hiking poles, water, snacks and/or whatever will make your hike more enjoyable.
Men and women are invited to hike Monday, June 5 at the Windstar Meadowlands Trail. This trail is 4-5 miles round trip and is relatively easy with beautiful views of Mt. Sopris. Dogs are NOT allowed on the hike or at the preserve.
Please meet at the Ranch House at 8 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead in Old Snowmass. Marti Stude will be the hike leader. Please come with ideas for future hikes and don’t forget all the hiking essentials!
Garfield County Tax Assesment
There have been a lot of questions amongst community members surrounding the recent valuations assigned from the Garfield county assessors office.
The 2023 Notices of Value were sent out on May 1, 2023. The 2023/2024 values are based on the real estate market between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2022. You may appeal your value to the Assessor no later than June 8, 2023. Instructions on how to appeal are on your Notice of Value. For more information, please see the Appeals page on the Garfield County Website.
Recreational Vehicle Parking and Storage
Many in the community own all sorts of recreational vehicles and other outdoor toys like boats, trailers, campers and more. We are noticing more and more of these types of vehicles in the neighborhood.
As a kind reminder, the Second Amendment to the RVR Master Declaration, Section 3.16, Vehicle Parking, Storage, Operation, and Repair, states: “No boats, trailers, buses, motor homes, campers (on or off supporting vehicles), motorcycles, snowmobiles, recreational vehicles, golf carts, trucks, industrial or commercial vehicles (both cabs or trailers), abandoned or inoperable vehicles, or any other similar vehicles shall be parked or stored in or upon the Master Common Areas or upon a Lot or Unit except for temporary loading and unloading during daylight hours…”
We ask those who are out of compliance to please find another location to store your RV vehicle off site. Thank you for your cooperation!
