Aging in Place Celebrates HUD Grant Funding, Expansion into Wayne County
We were joined on Monday, September 27 by U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) to announce the receipt of a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) for the expansion of our Aging in Place Services in Lackawanna and Wayne Counties.
Awarded as part of HUD’s Older Adult Home Modification Program (OAHMP), the grant will fund safety upgrades and home improvement projects in 225 homes to help us meet the needs of low-income elderly homeowners in Lackawanna and Wayne counties.
We are one of 32 grant recipients across the United States to be receiving funding in this round of OAHMP awards; other grant recipients include local and state government entities, nonprofit agencies, and public housing authorities. Altogether, more than 5,000 beneficiaries nationwide will be reached by services that will assist seniors in continuing to live in their homes.

October Paint the Town a Countywide Success
Our Paint the Town volunteer service event was a great success this month, with a week of hands-on on activities helping seniors in the Greater Lackawanna area. A total of five older adults (all clients of our Aging in Place program) were assisted with interior/exterior painting, landscaping, an installation of an outdoor rug and other minor home improvement work. An additional four older adults received safety kit installations. The repairs and improvements have made the homes safer, while adding to the visual appeal of the neighborhood.
We are especially thankful to volunteers from The AZEK Company, PS Mortgage, and Marywood University for offering their time and talents to assist older adults during Paint the Town. Over 212 volunteer hours were logged across 39 volunteers, with over $6,000 worth of volunteer labor performed. Without their assistance, we could not achieve our goals of improving quality of life for our neighbors.
Stay tuned for the details of our next community service event in the spring!
