Your friends at Fenwick pray that you and
your families stay safe during these trying times.

A Special Message  from Fenwick President,
Fr. Richard Peddicord, O.P.
"The mission of the school is continuing on" amid Illinois' shelter-in-place order, proclaims Fenwick's leader, Fr. Peddicord, O.P. Click on the arrow below to hear and see Father's special video message to Friar Alumni:
Yesterday Was the Feast of the Annunciation
Overwhelmed Fenwick Friars and friends, fear not. March 25th was the Feast of the Annunciation: the day the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus. Mary felt confused, but Gabriel said, "Do not be afraid, Mary." We all can pray that same prayer today: Be not afraid!
Opportunities to Pray
with the Fenwick Community
Even though we cannot be together, we can still come together as a community in prayer. Starting next Monday, you can listen to Fenwick Campus Minister Mary Beth May and faculty members Pete Gallo, John Schoeph '95, Kevin Roche '05 and Br. Joseph Trout, O.P. as they pray the Rosary daily at noon. Video links will be posted on the school's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds.

Friars Step Up During Crisis
Fenwick alumnus/internist Dr. Marty White '03 (left) is helping his wife, Margaret (a Trinity grad), in her effort to support area restaurants. The Whites are bringing lunches to the hard-working healthcare professionals at Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL), especially those in the ER and the units devoted to treating COVID-19.
In Chicago, Friar alumnus turned chef Michael Ponzio '01 (center) and his Union League team are minimizing waste during closure by making soups and pickling produce. Last week they donated 30 cases of fresh veggies & other perishables for children's meals at Boys & Girls Clubs.
Social Distancing: Alumnus Brian Moore '08 is marketing VP of event-management firm Turnkey DOT, which specializes in mobile tours/experiential marketing. The company has partnered with the CDC & Outdoor Advertising Assn. to wrap a truck (right) as a "mobile billboard" driving around Chicago.
Last Thursday, more than 3,500 people tuned in to watch former Fenwick faculty member and current parent Matt Scharpf play some tunes on Facebook Live to keep people entertained during isolation. Mr. Sharpf is a vice president at the Eurex Exchange's Chicago office.

Pray for the Safe Return of
Alumna Colleen Cullen '03
Alumna Friar Colleen Cullen '03 finds herself "stuck in Peru." She posted this last week on social media (see below) from South America. Concerned classmate Christie LaMountain '03 writes, "It’s possible that there are alumni with government connections that can help her to get home."

Friar Nation, please add Ms. Cullen and her family to your prayer lists.

Reading Recommendations from Fenwick's
John Gearen '32 Library
"We all make excuses not to read: we’re 'too busy,' reading isn’t a priority, or maybe we’ll do it some other time – the list of excuses is abundant," observes new Fenwick Librarian Judith Tichacek. "Since most of us are staying at home due to COVID-19, most of us now have the time to read. Depending on what you’re looking for from your next book, I challenge you to read one of the titles below." Ms. Tichacek's comments are italicized:

  1. If you’re looking for a group-reading recommendation, try Circe by Madeline Miller. Our entire book club loved this title and highly enjoyed it! It focuses on Circe’s narrative from the Odyssey. She’s definitely a force to be reckoned with, and her story shows just how complex her character is as a demigod, as a witch and as a woman.

  2. If you’re looking for a pandemic-related title, try Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. Critics argue it’s an oversimplification of a love story; others argue it’s about true love and how it is ever-lasting. Regardless of which way you lean, it’s an honest story about how those we love (and have loved in the past) always stay with us – even during a pandemic. It’s one of my favorites.

On June 10, 1945, Fenwick valedictorian Jim Wilson '45 addressed his classmates one month after Germany's surrender from World War II:
For the past four years Fenwick’s graduates have been embarking on a pretty dark world. They have shouldered this responsibility of freeing that world from fear, slavery, and oppression. Because of the zeal with which they have met this responsibility we, of the class of 1945, are able to look beyond the tragedy of war and visualize a peaceful world, void of fear and oppression.
We realize the responsibility of procuring a Christian peace that will be a fitting memorial, especially to those 38 Fenwick graduates who have given their lives in this conflict, and thereby made our graduation a step into a more peaceful world.

STUDENT PREACHER
Kicked Off Lenten Season
Fenwick Preaching Team member and Class of ’20 President Patrick Feldmeier reflected on the Lenten Season at Ash Wednesday Mass on February 26:
Forty days. Forty nights.
Students and faculty, now is the opportunity to move forward as followers of Christ. Lent is the time to evaluate our connection to God, and make an honest effort to strengthen our faith. Through the trials and tribulations of the following 40 days, let us ask God for trust, for trust will empower us through all of life’s challenges.

Beware of COVID-19 Email Scams!
Coronavirus-related email lures now represent the greatest collection of attack types united by a single theme," reports Proofpoint. Its Threat Research Team says it's the worse they've seen in years, if not ever. "We’ve observed credential phishing, malicious attachments, malicious links, business email compromise (BEC), fake landing pages, downloaders, spam, and malware, among others, all leveraging coronavirus lures."

Fenwick Technology Director Ernesto Nieto urges all of us to "please be careful if you receive an email regarding the Coronavirus or COVID-19 that looks suspicious." Remember to:
Look at the TO: line to verify an email address.

HOVER over a link, do not click, to see where that link will take you.

"Faith, Logic and St. Thomas Aquinas:
the Great Dominican"
"To say we have faith does not mean we automatically understand everything. It means we have the confidence to know God will help us understand." Listen to the rest of what Caroline Darrow '21 (Clarendon Hills, IL) had to say. Click on the arrow below to watch the video:
Please Patronize Our Sponsors!
Every year, Fenwick asks local businesses to sponsor our events in order to raise funds for tuition assistance for deserving students. Time and again, they have supported us and our students, helping to ensure our children receive an excellent education. As our community faces a difficult road ahead, it’s our turn to lend a hand and help them weather this storm.

Below (click on red button) is a list of the businesses who have served as recent sponsors of the Blackfriars Gala, the Friar Classic Golf Outing, the Pass the Torch Golf Outing and Fenwick Athletics. In the upcoming weeks and months, while being respectful of local government orders to maintain social distancing, we strongly encourage you to give your business to the sponsors listed below. Together we’ll get through this, and we’ll be a stronger community because we lifted each other up!
