Dear Tisch Community,
As we come together to celebrate Pride Month, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of
trailblazer Sylvia Rivera’s iconic speech “
Y’all Better Quiet Down”, delivered at the Christopher Street Day Liberation Rally in 1973. In this speech, and throughout her life, Sylvia persistently highlighted the transgender community’s contributions to the gay rights movement and critiqued more mainstream LGBTQIA+ organizations for their mistreatment of trans women—emphasizing their exclusion from the broader movement. Her advocacy for transgender inclusion challenged societal norms and raised awareness of the importance of intersectionality within the movement—a lens that continues to guide activists today.
Let us reflect on the legacy of Sylvia Rivera, and consider how we can create spaces that empower all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Given the historical and ongoing nature of discriminatory legislation and acts of violence targeting transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive individuals, we share the belief that there is “
Strength in Solidarity” and offer our unwavering commitment to uplifting trans and queer communities at NYU and beyond.
We are evermore determined to foster a climate of inclusivity, acceptance, and love, in pursuit of a world where everyone can freely and authentically be themselves.
Warmly,
Christina Salgado, Assistant Dean of Diversity
