HEBREW COLLEGE HIDDUSH FELLOWSHIP
Emerging Jewish Leaders Gather on Campus
Last weekend, Hebrew College welcomed a cohort of 40 emerging Jewish leaders to campus for an immersive retreat and shabbaton. Operating for the first time this year, Hebrew College’s Hiddush Fellowship seeks to cultivate the curiosity, creativity, and spirit that define effective Jewish leadership in the 21st century through sustained learning, mentorship with experienced rabbis, and encounters with the intellectual and spiritual life of the rabbinical school. While participants entered the fellowship from many backgrounds and professional paths, the program’s broader aim is to nurture a rising generation of Jewish leaders grounded in Torah, committed to service, and passionate about guiding communities through the complexities of contemporary Jewish life. The fellows’ time on campus served as the centerpiece of a program that will continue online for the duration of the calendar year.
Hebrew College is enormously grateful to the H&F Baker Foundation for their lead gift to make this pilot fellowship possible, as well as to the Dorot Foundation, for their generous supporting grant. The College is also deeply grateful to the fellows whose curiosity and passion animate this community of learning.

I have truly enjoyed every moment of the program so far, and I am already looking forward to the rest of our time together.” — Facely Roame, Temple Kol Emeth, Marietta, GA

Campus Partnership in Action: Hebrew College-Mayyim Hayyim Rabbinic Interns Deepen Community Connections
“We are deeply grateful for our exceptional Hebrew College Rabbinic Interns, Sivan Piatigorsky-Roth and Yael Marans, who each dedicate 10 hours a week to Mayyim Hayyim. They strengthen our education programs, enrich our mikveh guiding, and expand our community engagement—and we’re thrilled to have them teaching at Lehrhaus on Tuesday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 24. As vital bridges between Mayyim Hayyim and Hebrew College, Yael and Sivan deepen the shared learning between our institutions. This year, they have written immersion ceremonies, crafted community newsletters, led text study for our Seven Steps Online Mikveh Guide, and served as thoughtful ambassadors. They bring insight, care, and rabbinic wisdom to all they do, and we are fortunate to have their partnership and leadership on our team.” — Bev Klau, Mayyim Hayyim Director of Programs and Partnerships

In our own wildernesses—personal, communal, societal—the temptation is to rush ahead, to force resolution. We crave unambiguous direction. Yet Parshat Pekudei closes the book of Exodus not with a triumphant declaration, but with a hovering cloud. Tradition teaches that today, in the absence of the mishkan, our tables become our altars. I like to imagine not only the dining table, where bread and wine sanctify daily life, but also the table where we create—where we write, sketch, weave, cook, mend, compose. These, too, are sanctuaries. When we engage in creativity not only as performance but as practice, we build inner mishkans—spaces where the Divine might dwell. And when the cloud comes—when clarity blurs and outcomes remain uncertain—we are invited not to panic, but to pause.

Educating for Leadership, Dialogue, and Resilience
Hebrew College Vice President Dr. Susie Tanchel and Dean of the Rabbinical School Rabbi Daniel Klein `10 were featured in the March issue of Covenant Foundation Site Line. The article “Educating for Leadership, Dialogue, and Resilience, at Hebrew College” focused on a conversation with Tanchel and Klein about leading intentional, productive dialogue on campus, particularly related to the challenges of the pandemic and October 7.
“We were processing our own feelings and managing our own responses to the attack, and at the same time we had to lead a pluralistic institution,” Tanchel said. “We needed to quickly figure out how to hold ourselves accountable—to ourselves, and to our community. We decided to engage students in dialogue around leadership,” she continued. “Our students are going to be leading institutions very soon. We needed to think with them about what it would mean to lead a community through a crisis like this, and what it would mean to hold ourselves responsible, too.” Read the article
