Student Spotlight

ELI NAHMIAS '17
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love that Brebeuf Jesuit feels like a community. From your first day through all four years in school, everyone says hi to each other in the hallways and welcomes one another. People are always willing to help and answer questions. Teachers really want to make sure you get a good education at Brebeuf Jesuit.
Favorite Class:
My favorite class so far has been AP European History with Mr. Spotts. I found the class interesting and thought it was cool to see history from a different perspective since we usually study U.S. history. I also thought Mr. Spotts did a good job relating things to today and making us see how people are still important today even though they lived a long time ago.
Future Plans:
I hope to attend Boston College next year and study business and finance. I am not sure what the future holds, but I think it would be fun to study abroad in college and learn about different cultures.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:
Brebeuf Jesuit Tennis Team
President of Jewish Student Union
Kriya Club
BBYO – Jewish Teen Leadership Program
Random Fact:
I was in the sixth biggest earthquake in Chile in 2010. My aunt is from Chile so we were visiting family when it happened.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Brebeuf Jesuit is definitely academically rigorous. Teachers make sure you try your hardest and each assignment or activity has a purpose. Assignments are difficult, but they have to be in order to prepare for college. Since assignments can be difficult, teachers make themselves available to help students do well. The teachers at Brebeuf Jesuit encourage you to come to their office if you need help or think something is too hard. I know the Math Department specifically, is always there to help and encourages students to come into the office.
Would you rather…
Eat ice cream or pizza as the only food for the rest of your life?
I would rather eat ice cream because there are lots of flavors and it is good. It is especially good when it is hot outside like it has been all summer.
Be stuck on a broken ski lift or broken elevator?
I would rather be stuck on a ski lift because I think I would start freaking out in an elevator because it is an enclosed space and could get hot. I think it would be easier to get help in the ski lift versus the elevator which might be stuck for a while.
Would you rather spend one year sailing around the world or living in the heart of London?
I would rather go sailing because you could explore the world more than just staying in one spot. It would be fun to be in the ocean with all of the fresh air and weather.
Live in Antarctica or the Sahara Desert?
I would rather live in Antarctica because not many people have been there and it would be cool to see all of the animals.
Be known for a one-hit wonder for a novel or a song?
I would rather be known for a novel because I cannot sing. Plus it would be interesting because people could make it into a movie.

All-School Assembly - September 7

On Wednesday, September 7, Brebeuf Jesuit students, faculty and staff will participate in an All-School Assembly on the topic of police-community relations. Inspired by the events of this summer and their connection to the continuing discussion of the relationship between police officers and African-American communities, the assembly is intended to provide an opportunity for the Brebeuf Jesuit community to engage a significant current topic.
Speaking at the assembly will be Mr. Rick Hite, former police officer and police chief for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department who now serves as the executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the state agency charged with investigating and responding to citizen complaints about violations of their rights. Opening the convocation and providing context for the discussion is Kourtney Kinchen '17, current co-president of the Black Student Union. After Kourtney’s opening and Mr. Hite’s remarks, a question-and-answer session will provide a chance for the audience to engage in the conversation.
All members of the Brebeuf community are welcome at the assembly.

News From the Academic Counseling Department

If you are a parent of a student who will be requesting accommodations to take the ACT during the 2016-2017 school year, please be aware that the process has changed. In order to request accommodations, please follow the following steps:

To request accommodations for an administration of the ACT, examinees must first:

  • Create an ACT web account, or log in to an existing account
  • Register for a test date

When registering, examinees must determine what accommodations will meet their needs.

Refer to the comparison chart within the Accommodations on the ACT® Test to review the requirements and features of National Extended Time (50% time extension) and Special Testing (at examinee’s school) to decide which is most appropriate for you.

Once an examinee has registered online for the ACT, ACT will automatically email instructions (with Subject: Requesting Accommodations on the ACT) regarding how to work with a qualified school official (which will be Ms. Christina Rhodes in the Academic Counseling Department) to request accommodations and submit supporting documentation via the Test Accessibility and Accommodations System (TAA).

Please Note: All accommodation requests must be submitted by Ms. Rhodes through TAA by the published registration deadlines for your preferred test date. Refer to View Test Dates for those registration deadlines.

If you have any further questions, please contact Ms. Rhodes, Director of Academic Counseling.

Student Signups for Dayspring Now Available

Every Thursday during the 2016-2017 school year, a group of four or five students will be traveling to the Dayspring Center (a homeless shelter for families) to serve lunch and engage in conversation with the staff and residents. This will be an opportunity for students to learn more about homelessness in Indianapolis and volunteer outside of their required service hours. This will be the third year of the Brebeuf Jesuit partnership with Dayspring and Brebeuf Jesuit has found it to provide truly meaningful service experiences for Brebeuf Jesuit students.

The first trip will be Thursday, September 8. The group leave school at 11:00 a.m. and return to school by 2:00 p.m. which results in the students missing 2-3 periods of the school day.

To sign a student up for a trip to Dayspring please, click here.

Please contact Nick Klingler with any questions regarding our weekly trips to Dayspring.
