TennCare Pauses Episodes of Care Rollout
TennCare has announced it will temporarily stop designing new episodes of care for its episode payment model so the Bureau can dedicate more resources to maintaining and improving the 48 episodes already in place.

NAM has worked with TMA for years to represent physicians' interests and push the state to address serious flaws in the TennCare episodes program design and implementation. We still have concerns about the transparency, accuracy, and effectiveness of the program but are encouraged by the state's agreeing to the pause-and-fix approach we requested last fall.
Physicians Participating in Ingram Institute for 2018
A group of 12 physician leaders from around the state will meet on Monteagle next month to learn about collaboration, influence, conflict management, and negotiation through a leadership training program offered by the Tennessee Medical Association. The following three NAM members were selected to participate in the 2018 class of the Leadership Immersion Program, part of the John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership:

  • Dr. Kenya Miles
  • Dr. Nefeteria Coffee
  • Dr. John Scott Major
Update on Opioids
The medical community, and more specifically NAM and TMA, have been working for several years to turn back the dial on what physicians initially thought were safe drugs, so we can curb the initial supply and help prevent misuse and abuse. Due to the opioid epidemic in Tennessee, state legislators have also been working to scale back opioid use. For more information, visit the TMA Law Guide topics on opioid prescribing, which includes updates to reflect the changes in the law.

Additionally, NAM members can access TMA's Opioid Resource Center, which includes many great resources, such as a reference sheet to help answer some quick questions about the new law and a template informed consent form adapted from the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Physicians and other prescribers are advised to have this form reviewed by legal counsel prior to use and regularly reviewed thereafter. Explore these resources and help fight Tennessee’s opioid epidemic.  If you need assistance logging into the resource center, please contact Nikki Ringenberg at nringenberg@nashvillemedicine.org.
New Laws Effective July 1
Several new laws affecting physicians and the practice of medicine were passed by the 2018 General Assembly and will take effect July 1, including two concerning opioids. Click here to find more information on all the bills. Contact the TMA Legal Department at (800) 659-1862 or legal@tnmed.org with any questions.
