Celebrate student achievement with LVCA!
Literacy Volunteers celebrates all of our student voters, including the 27 folks who voted for the first time!

A note from Executive Director, Ellen M. Osborne

As many of you know, most of our students are immigrants and refugees. The shifting political landscape could significantly impact our students and our organization. While we can’t predict who might be affected, we do know that we will remain steadfast in our mission. We receive a quarter of our funding from the Department of Education. Regardless of what happens, we are committed to staying put. We will continue supporting our students’ striving to reach their fullest potential on their learning journeys. Our work in fostering human connections through recruiting and training volunteer tutors will persist. We invite you to join us as a volunteer or support our efforts with a donation to help sustain our program.

Thank you for supporting our mission!

Art for a cause!

LVCA Tutor, Mary Alice Hostetter, knows about giving back to the community. When she retired, she knew that she wanted to volunteer, and after hearing about LVCA from friends and literacy tutoring from her siblings up north, she knew it was something she wanted to do. Signing up to become a tutor seemed like a natural fit.
Mary Alice and her wife, Terry Coffey, also know about giving back. For fifteen years, they have been hosting a holiday art show with a portion of the proceeds going to a local charity. This year, they have generously picked LVCA!
Terry explains that the art show "began as we desired to share our works in painting, jewelry-making, writing, and so many other expressions of art and to connect with our Charlottesville community.  It is a thrill for Mary Alice and I to be able to continue to do so and share the profits."
Speaking with Mary Alice, it is clear that LVCA and her student, Leticia, mean a lot to her. Watching how easily they laugh together, their comradery is apparent. When asked about what she likes best about Mary Alice, Leticia said the thing we hear most repeated from our students: her patience.
We are grateful to Mary Alice and Terry for thinking of LVCA this upcoming holiday season! Get some holiday shopping done December 7 and 8 and support LVCA!

October was a month full of community engagement. Here are a few highlights:
  • Steven Reid, Program Manager, attended the ProLiteracy Conference in Baltimore. One of his presentations highlighted the collaborative work we are doing with Virginia's other Community-Based Literacy Organizations (CBLOs).
  • Communications Coordinator, Rebecca Thomas, spoke to WVIR29 about LVCA's current need for tutors
  • Much of the LVCA team attended the annual Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education (VAACE) conference held here in Charlottesville. Rebecca gave a presentation on digital resilience and provided material for a presentation on beginning classroom activities. Steven gave a presentation on vocabulary skills. It was wonderful to see LVCA tutors and second language educators, Charlotte and Ali, there, too!
