Welcome to our new Advisory Board Chair, Jill Hannaford

We are delighted to announce that Jill Hannaford has been appointed to be the new chair of the Henry Halloran Trust Advisory Board.

Jill is a social scientist who has worked in community engagement and social sustainability for over 25 years. She was a founding member of the International Association for Public Participation, and a founding partner of CareerTrackers, an Indigenous internship program that promotes and enables diversity at GHD and in the built environment industry. Jill has also been a key driver in GHD’s award-winning approach to diversity in the workplace.

Thank you to former Chair, Emeritus Professor Tong Wu

Our former Chair, Emeritus Professor Tong Wu, has stepped down after guiding the Henry Halloran Research Trust from its foundation in 2013. Tong’s extensive experience at senior leadership across the University sector (including most recently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development and International at Western Sydney University) and his international research standing within urbanism and beyond was of enormous benefit to the Trust’s establishment and growth. We thank Emeritus Professor Tong Wu for his generous contributions and leadership over many years.

Announcement: Meet our new Martin Payne Practitioners in Residence

Our Practitioner in Residence Program allows experienced practitioners to undertake a period of supported research in residence at the University, working with academics and students and engaging with our program of public events.

In 2023, the PIR Program was renamed to honour and recognise the contributions of Martin Payne, who was instrumental in supporting the establishment of the Henry Halloran Research Trust and its mission to foster connections between the University and wider policy and practice communities.

Over many years of tenure with the University’s urban and regional planning program, Martin was also a widely respected educator and researcher, combining his scholarship with ongoing planning practice.

So we are delighted to introduce our two inaugural Practitioners.

Vibhavari Meghnad is an urban planner and policy professional with over four years of experience across both the public and private sectors. Vibhavari is currently a Planning Officer at the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure where she is focused on strategic planning to support positive outcomes across Greater Sydney and NSW. Vibhavari’s research project will aim to identify the role of the circular economy in supporting sustainable and liveable residential development in new and renewed neighbourhoods.

Lucy Band is a social planner and advocate for sustainable, inclusive, and creative cities. Lucy has contributed to city shaping projects across Australia and the UK and is currently Director - Social Strategy at Ethos Urban, a national urban solutions company. Lucy Band's research project will explore how to embed wellbeing into the NSW Planning System: The recent release of Australia’s first Wellbeing Framework is a strong signal of growing domestic pressure to better align economic, environmental, and social goals in policy making.

Festival of "Contested" Urbanism Review 2023

From debates about density to protests over environmental heritage or the loss of public housing, the 2023 Festival of 'Contested' Urbanism featured an extraordinary number of events and speakers in Sydney and across Australia.

Save the Date: Festival of Urbanism 2024

We are excited to announce that the next Festival of Urbanism will take place in October this year. It will once again feature events around Australia, and most of the Sydney-based events will be held between the 14th to 18th of October. This year’s theme is ‘Public’ Urbanism – shining light on the critical importance of public institutions, design, and planning for our cities and regions as well as the ongoing tensions between private and public interests playing out across the urban landscape.

The Great Housing Hijack by Cameron Murray

This year’s public events program kicked off with a bang, with our special series on housing attracting record numbers. From the seemingly utopian approach to social housing in the Netherlands to the increasingly divided ‘wealthscapes’ driving social polarisation around the world, you can catch up on lectures by visitors Professor Richard Ronald and Dr Rowan Arundel, the University of Amsterdam via the links below.

We also enjoyed launching former Halloran Postdoctoral Scholar, Dr Cameron Murray’s latest book ‘The Great Housing Hijack”, which reveals how vested interests pull the strings on the property market, and offers solutions for genuinely affordable housing.
