NEWS AND VIEWS
More Than You Think!

Download Images to View If we asked, "What do you connect to the Internet?" your answer could be, "Just about everything!" In addition to typical things like a PC, tablet or smart TV, what about security cameras, smart speakers (like Amazon's Alexa), sound systems (Sonos), lighting systems, video door bells (Ring), door locks, thermostats (Nest), even exercise bikes (Peloton)? Not to mention the smartphone that just about everyone over the age of 12 in your household has in their hands!

Most of these devices are connected via WiFi, and if, in addition to the above, you subscribe to one or more video streaming services (like Netflix or the new Disney+) or if you have online gamers at home, issues may arise. While most people are aware that video streaming and online gaming eat up a lot of bandwidth, what about all the other WiFi-enabled devices operating at the same time? And if multiple people are streaming at the same time — look out! HD video has gone from 720p to 1080p to 4K (8K coming soon) in the last decade. The greater the resolution, the more bandwidth required, putting even more pressure on your in-home broadband network.

WiFi signals lose strength as soon as they leave the modem/router, so the further away from the wired source, the slower things get. Most people may only have their PC hardwired to the modem/router, meaning everything else is connected via WiFi. Older WiFi routers may only utilize one channel, further reducing effectiveness. 3 Rivers has ways to help improve your WiFi experience — whether that's through providing the latest router, offering additional access points to improve coverage throughout your house or simply upgrading you to a higher Internet service tier. One of our friendly, local customer sales and service representatives will be glad to walk you through available options. Give us a call!
