From the ChairGreetings from Clemson. 2022 has already proven to be an excellent year for Clemson IE! With several new faculty joining the Department in 2020 and 2021, we now boast a full-time faculty size of 23 (including 19 tenured or tenure-track faculty). Our undergraduate student population has reached almost 600 students in recent years, with nearly 250 graduate students across our three graduate programs. In this issue, we dedicate a bit more space to the successes of our students. As you can see from the many story links, our B.S., M.S., M.Eng. and Ph.D. students give us a lot to brag about.Clemson IE has also experienced tremendous growth in the productivity, innovation and visibility of our faculty. This growth has positioned our department to become a top public IE department in the future, and we have already made significant strides towards this ambitious goal. We have revamped our website to better highlight the faculty and their research. You can quickly see our methods-based areas of expertise, including optimization, statistical modeling and learning, stochastic modeling and systems, task analysis, and naturalistic decision making. Clemson IE also has several application-based areas of expertise, including health systems, production and manufacturing, resilience and security in complex systems, and transportation and logistics. Our faculty and students make real-world applications of this expertise in our numerous labs, focusing on areas such as human factors, personalized healthcare, occupational biomechanics, mobility systems, supply chain management and logistics. This year, we have also been updating our strategic plan. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing an environment built on our department’s core values, called “IE CIVIC.” We require Innovation and Excellence; with Communication, Integrity, Vibrancy, Inclusiveness and Collegiality. Through this foundation of core values, we relentlessly pursue our mission of leading discovery and innovation in engineering knowledge and methods for designing, developing and improving systems that include humans, machines, information and technology. Our achievements to date are due to the tireless efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff, who are committed to maintaining a student-focused emphasis in both scholarly research and educational programs. We stand prepared to build upon them and elevate Clemson IE to the highest national and international prominence. For additional information about our department, please visit our website at ie.clemson.edu. Again, I would like to congratulate the students, staff and faculty for their dedication to making Clemson IE a premier destination for students and researchers worldwide.
