CABINET LETTER FROM DR. ALUMBAUGH

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
We are well into our Lenten season, which is a time that asks us to reflect deeply about our relationship to God, community, and self. It is a period that asks us as an educational community to be especially intentional about the way we embody the Lasallian Core Principles. This past week alone highlights beautifully our students’ desire and ability to care for and to learn from the spiritual communities and natural world of which they are a part.
Literally, as I was writing this, the student daily announcement team encouraged everyone to sign up for the remaining slots for this Friday’s blood drive sponsored by the DLS/CHS Red Cross Club by noting that blood donation is “a great way to make an impact and pay it forward for people in our community.” Our 26th Charity Challenge is also in full swing. It is the school's oldest fundraiser and began as “a way to embrace almsgiving during Lent.” Our Junior classes continue to make trips to St. Anthony’s in San Francisco for their retreat service experience that we call “FSC: Faith, Service, Community.” In the two years since this has become embedded in our Junior Religion curriculum, I will be chaperoning it for the sixth time next week, and it is one of the most meaningful trips I make with students yearly. It is additionally hard to believe that on Wednesday we said goodbye to the student participants and leaders for our 150th Kairos Retreat.

Our accreditation with the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) requires that we annually distribute a Standards of Excellence School Vitality survey to all of our stakeholder groups.
Our next set of anonymous surveys will happen in a few days. Your son will be asked to complete a WCEA-driven student survey during the Community period on March 14, and faculty and staff will complete their own survey on March 15.
Please look for an email next week with a link to the special parent survey that we are requesting all parents complete by Friday, March 22.

ALMSGIVING AT DE LA SALLE
|
|
|
Our annual Spartan Charity Challenge runs through March 25. This year, we are supporting four very worthy causes: Middle East Children's Alliance in Gaza, the Lasallian Youth Study Centers in Eritrea, Africa, the Monument Crisis Center in Concord, and the De La Salle Brotherhood Fund. Throughout Lent, students have been asked to donate spare change. Click the button below if you would like to donate.

Recently, Ms. Caitlin Coblentz's freshman English classes participated in a service learning project centered around hunger and food insecurity. A mini food drive took place to support The GaelPantry at Saint Mary's College. In total, 80 De La Salle students donated more than 2,500 food items. It was so much food that the GaelPantry could not take it all so the remaining food was donated to the Contra Costa Food Bank.

This year, our Healing Spaces Club is working with Pat Everette, the widow of 28-year Navy veteran Oliver Everette, who recently passed away. The club plans to create a home where Pat can live with dignity and honor the military legacy of Oliver. It intends to make a number of home repairs, purchase new furniture and gutters, and complete some landscaping. Click the button below to support this worthy cause!

Tax Season and Charitable Giving Benefits |
|
|
Tax season is here! If you made a charitable gift to De La Salle in 2023, as long as you itemize your tax return, you will still be able to deduct your charitable gifts. When you are meeting with your tax specialist, be sure to ask them about the benefits you will receive in 2023 and start planning for your charitable giving in 2024!
Visit our Tax Information page for more information about Stock Donations, Planned Gift, and Recurring Gifts. You can also contact Mark Chiarucci (chiaruccm@dlshs.org) or Karla Wiese (wiesek@dlshs.org) with questions.
