Cross-Country Skiing or Snowshoeing on President’s Day

Please join us for a ski/snowshoe afternoon at the Notchview Reservation in Windsor, MA, on Monday, February 20. All Academy families and friends are invited. Notchview offers a cozy warming lodge, ski and snowshoe rentals, daily trail passes, and 25 km of beautiful, groomed trails. Let’s meet at the lodge in time to get on the trails around 2 p.m. No RSVP necessary; just show up if you’d like to join in. February 23: Student & Faculty Basketball Games and More

To celebrate the end of our winter sports season, we will have a basketball competition at The Cowell Gym. In addition to our annual faculty vs. basketball team game, students and faculty have put together teams that will compete against one another.  Please join us at The Cowell (51 Maple Street in Shelburne Falls) on February 23 at 3:00 PM.

Four Performances in March

Please join us for The Academy's 2016-2017 winter play, Thornton Wilder's Our Town. Premiering in 1938, Our Town has never fallen out of fashion and is still produced countless times across the United States year in and year out. It is a play about love, life, and death, and is appropriate for audiences of all ages.
Evening performances on March 3, 10 and 11 begin at 7:00 PM. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, and $6 for students and seniors. A free matinee performance will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 4. Tickets can be reserved and purchased here
Intermission Help Needed for Upcoming Performances of Our Town 
The Academy Parents Council (APC) will host a refreshment table during each of the play performances. Please contact Diane Bigelow if you would be willing to set up, man, and clean up the table at any of the performances (March 3 at 7 PM, March 4 at 2 PM, March 10 at 7 PM, March 11 at 7 PM). Cookies and water will be served.

ACADEMY CLASSROOM CLOSE UP:  Climate Connections

Seventh grade students in Mr. Forbes' Climate Connections class study whether temperature affects the rate of chemical weathering. Each of the five groups of students had a single beaker of water, ranging in temperature from 5 to 45 degrees Celsius. They timed the dissolution of an antacid tablet and then graphed their results.

SPORTS RECAP - Week of   February 17

The girls basketball team had a wonderful end to their season with a 36-17 victory over Twin Valley Middle School at the Cowell Gym on Wednesday afternoon. Eliza Bigelow led the way with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and everyone on the team scored during the game! It was a great end to the girls' season...and now they will take on the faculty in a shortened game next Thursday, February 23, as part of the sports celebration.
The ski season - both racers and recreational skiers - will have their last day on the slopes on Wednesday, February 22.

BACKPACK SUPPLIES DRIVE CONTINUES

Thanks to the generous support of our staff and families, our backpack supplies drive is going well!  As of today, items that will complete the current phase are:
  • 16 1" binders
  • 7 packages of 8 dividers for the binders
  • many two-pocket folders
Please consider shopping this weekend to help us wrap up this portion of the drive next week. Please consult this list for more information.

Grandparents and Special Persons Day

Grandparents and Special Persons Day has been rescheduled from Friday, April 14 to Friday, April 28. Invitations will be sent in March. Should you have address updates or wish to invite another adult family member or close family friend, please contact Carol Foote with name and address information. We look forward to welcoming grandparents and friends to campus.

THE ACADEMY TO HOST

WATER JUSTICE CONFERENCE

The Academy will play host for a program co-sponsored by the Charlemont Forum and Rowe Center during Spring Break on March 22-24. The Trinity Institute conference, with a focus on water justice, will bring presenters together from all over the world via webcast, as well as local speakers.
