DFA relaunching Franklin Locals summer volunteer program
By Coleman Bomar • Staff Writer
After a hiatus last year, the Downtown Franklin Association is seeking applicants for its Franklin Locals volunteer, greeter and concierge program for summer shifts in June. Franklin Locals are trained on-the-street representatives who answer questions, give recommendations and share the story of Franklin with out-of-town friends and tourists.
“It was close to pandemic time that a lot of the programming sort of died out,” DFA Managing Director Heidi Hood said. “I’ve been fortunate to serve as the managing director of the DFA since last August, and I’ve seen things opening up, and things are returning that were missing for a while.

Earlier, in the first game of the evening, Brentwood stayed afloat in the tourney by hammering Hillsboro, 12-2, in an elimination game.

Baseball: GCA stays hungry despite region title win
By Charles Pulliam • Multimedia Reporter
FRANKLIN – Another fast start and more big bats led to a Division II-A Middle Region baseball championship for Grace Christian Academy, but the Lions didn’t celebrate Tuesday.
Even after scoring eight runs in the first inning and clinching the region title with a 9-4 win over visiting Goodpasture at Clyde Pewitt Field near Leiper's Fork, the GCA boys stayed calm. They weren't very animated after winning the regular season district title or district tournament title either.
“This is another big win for our program and it’s our first region title in a while, but we don’t want to let up,” said GCA’s Jordan Carter, who went 2-for-4 with a home run in the first inning and two RBI Tuesday.

BRENTWOOD – For the second time in three days, the Summit High School baseball team picked up a win against District 12-4A regular season champion Ravenwood.
The Spartans posted a 10-8 win Tuesday to clinch the district tournament championship, overcoming six early runs from the hosts and top-seeded Raptors.
Summit coach Chad Kirby said his team made some uncharacteristic mistakes early, but scored in each inning and rode a “gritty” performance from pitcher Devin Thrain to stop Ravenwood once again. They defeated the Raptors 13-6 on Sunday to earn a shot at the title.

Artist uses magazine paper to depict ‘best small town in America’
By Carole Robinson • Staff Writer
Carolyn Beehler’s art often looks like an impressionist-style oil painting. But with a closer look, the true character of the artwork is unveiled: it’s made with tiny pieces of magazine paper.
Beehler, a Franklin native and 2009 graduate of O’More College of Design, said she’s always loved paper and painting.
“I wanted to find a way to render paper like paint,” she said. “Now, I’m upcycling paper to give it greater value.”

Blood drive hosted in partnership by WMC, Bone & Joint Institute of Tennessee
Herald Reports
Williamson Medical Center and Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee are hosting a drive with Blood Assurance – the sole provider of blood products for WMC – on May 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Donors are encouraged to sign up via the Blood Assurance website, though walk-ins are welcome.
“Anytime a holiday approaches, we see a drop in blood donors as people are traveling or have other activities,” said Max Winitz, public relations specialist with Blood Assurance. “This impacts our already depleted supply of blood. Additionally, generally holidays mean increased cars on the road resulting in more accidents where people may need blood.

Horses and zebra to be featured at Rodeo
By Ruth NicolausFor the Herald
It’s going to be wild and Western at this year’s Franklin Rodeo.
Wild animal trainer, outlaw, rancher and rodeo entertainer extraordinaire John Payne, the “One Arm Bandit,” rolls into town for the rodeo May 19-21.
And with him comes his animals. He’ll bring beautiful, tri-colored mustangs straight from the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. These beautiful mustangs are direct descendants of the horses that escaped from the Spanish conquistadors’ herds and became wild on the continent’s grasslands.
