October Training
We are very excited to announce that we have adapted our Tutor Training so that we can offer it virtually. Our last tutor training was held in March and we are eager to train a new group of volunteers who can start tutoring immediately.
In October, we will offer training for new volunteers through a three-part series of Zoom meetings and online modules. Staff will train new volunteers on how to tutor an adult one-on-one in the current pandemic climate.
October's training will be offered on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Volunteers can select the dates that work best for their schedule.
Literacy Day Fundraiser
Tuesday, September 8 is International Literacy Day. To celebrate, Kendra Scott has generously offered to host a Give Back day for LVCA.
On September 8 and 9 you can shop online and 20% of all proceeds will be donated back to our organization. Just be sure you use the code GIVEBACK9058.
Kendra Scott offers jewelry, home decor, gifts, and beauty. From decorative trays to nail polish, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more. Their store is located in The Shops at Stonefield.

WGCville Welcoming Season
Each September, Welcoming Week is celebrated as a week to bring together immigrants and US-born community members in a spirit of unity. Due to the pandemic, all local events will be held online this year and will be offered throughout the fall. Click here for the full schedule.
Our Program Manager, Steven Reid, will participate in a discussion on September 22 at 6:00 p.m. called Getting Past Smile & Nod: Improving Communication with English Learners. Presenters will share simple strategies for improving communication with English learners, whether they are your neighbors, workers, co-workers, parents of students, or customers. These will include tips on what do and pitfalls to avoid.
Unfortunately, we know that we can not safely host Wordplay at The Paramount this fall. We are working with them to schedule the event for Spring 2021 and we're really hoping we can bring the community together for a great game next April.
We are, however, working on something to help hold everyone over until then. Staff and volunteers are hard at work to host a virtual Trivia Night in October. This event will have many of the aspects of Wordplay that we all love: random trivia, word games, and raffle prizes. You can think of it as a pre-season Wordplay event! We're finalizing all the details now and hope to officially announce the event soon. If you have any questions or want to get involved, please email Heather
