Lunar New Year Market 2025: A Cultural Celebration of Tradition and Community

Lunar New Year is a time of celebration, reflection, and renewal, and UBC Botanical Garden’s goal for this year’s Lunar New Year market is to create an experience that encourages communities to connect more deeply with the beauty and cultural significance of the Asian Garden. Through engaging educational activities and interactive experiences, it will be an opportunity to appreciate the Garden’s commitment to celebrate culture, community and education. By fostering an environment that highlights the diverse customs and values associated with this vibrant holiday, we aim to promote greater understanding and advance racial equity within the community.

Lunar New Year 2025 Workshops

This year's Lunar New Year Market will have more workshops to offer. We have a wide range of activities suitable for people of all ages and levels. Get tickets to workshops including watercolouring, calligraphy, sweet dumpling making and learn to build-a-buddy. Hurry, as tickets are limited!

An Introduction to Research Conducted at UBC Botanical Garden

Anyone who visits UBC Botanical Garden can see and feel that it is a place of beauty and biological diversity as well as human and ecological well-being. However, not everyone fully appreciates the fact that the Garden is also a space of investigation, experimentation and learning—in other words, a space of research. Perhaps this is in part because of assumptions that are often made about what counts as research. In my new role as writer-in-residence and science communicator at UBC Botanical Garden, I have been doing a lot of thinking about this question. What does it mean to do research in a garden? Might understanding of botanical gardens and research alike be expanded if people knew more about it?

January in the Garden:

Embark on a Winter Journey this month at the Garden

Maples are usually recognized by their distinctive leaves; thus, winter is generally not a time recommended for their study. But the snake bark maples (also known as stripe-bark maples) are another story. They are among the most beautiful and interesting of all maples, at least at this time of year. The most recognizable feature of the snake barks is their attractive stems. Stem striping is due to waxes that are produced and accumulate in the longitudinal fissures of the expanding bark. While the most common species exhibit strikingly striped stems, not all species in this group do.

Nitobe Memorial Garden:Tuesday-Friday from 10am-2pm
The Shop in the Garden is closed and will return for Lunar New Year Market weekend. The Shop will then reopen with regular hours starting March 1st
