Bridges E-Newsletter Winter 2017
United Way of the Capital Region | Bridges Society
Bridges Society Chair Jason Brown and Vice Chair Angela Tatum welcome members to the December event.
Giving Kids the Gift of Reading

Thirty-five United Way of the Capital Region Bridges Society members gathered in December at local hot spot, Red Sky Café, for a networking and volunteering event.

Attendees enjoyed delicious food and beverages while wrapping 150 books and writing notes of encouragement for Downey Elementary School students. The books and notes were distributed in time for the holidays and a majority of them went to children who will participate in this winter’s Bridges Society Barnes & Noble field trips.

Special thanks to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Erie Insurance, M&T Bank and Hersha for collecting books for this project.

Volunteers Needed for Field Trips

Join us as a volunteer chaperone for United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society’s annual Literacy for Life field trip at Barnes & Noble.

After being paired with a third grade student from Downey Elementary School, you will go on a scavenger hunt in the store and read books with your new friend. Thanks to event sponsor Enterprise Rent-a-Car, students will be able to select a new book to take home. We need at least 20 volunteers for each day, so this is a great opportunity to invite a friend or co-worker to as a prospect.

The events will take place on January 31, February 1 and February 2 from 9:15-11:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Camp Hill. Unfortunately, Barnes & Noble is no longer able to let us into the store prior to when it opens at 9 a.m., so please plan on arriving at 9:15 a.m. A brief orientation will take place before the students arrive.

In the case of inclement weather, we will notify you as early as possibility of any cancellation. In general, if Harrisburg School District is closed or has a delay, the event will be rescheduled.

Clearances are preferred for volunteers at this event, but not required. If you have clearances and have not provided a copy to United Way, please send them as soon as possible to Michelle Loomis at mloomis@uwcr.org. If you are interest in obtaining clearances, contact Heidi Neuhaus at hneuhaus@uwcr.org for more information.

Please sign up no later than January 23 at http://uwcr.partnershipplanners.org/literacyforlife.

Save the Date for Youth Day of Caring 2017

Mark your calendars! United Way of the Capital Region’s Youth Day of Caring will be on Friday, March 31 from 8 a.m. – noon on City Island in Harrisburg. Once again we will partner with the City of Harrisburg to undertake a major clean-up and beautification of City Island and Front Street to get them ready for the spring season.

Bridges Society members will be needed to serve a variety of volunteer positions including project leaders, chaperones, hospitality helpers and photographers. More information and a registration link will be sent at the end of January.

Special thanks to event sponsor Members 1st Federal Credit Union and lunch sponsor Capital Blue Store.
