This year has flown for FLiQC!

Since our establishment, FLiQC has made great progress in building the foundations of the Centre. Our community has grown to include 17 Chief Investigators, 3 Postdoctoral Fellows, 11 PhD Scholars, and a dedicated professional team supporting our activities.

We have welcomed our first PhD cohort, with seven students commencing from our first recruitment round and a further four scholarships awarded in recently finalised round two. 

This year also saw several key milestones, including the appointment of Prof. Glenn Wightwick as Chair of the FLiQC Advisory Board, the official Centre launch, our inaugural Centre Member Conference, and our first Quantum Computing School delivered with the Sydney Quantum Academy.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to establishing FLiQC. The enthusiasm, collaboration and commitment across our universities and industry partners have created a strong foundation for the years ahead.

I look forward to continuing this journey together as we grow our research community, welcome more students, and grow Australia’s future quantum workforce.

Our first cohort of FLiQC students from Round 1 recruitment is arriving!

Four students have already commenced, with another three commencing in the coming months.

Following the recent completion of Round Two recruitment, four additional scholarships have been awarded. Recruitment for the next intake is already underway, with the next round opening in August.

Luca is researching the 'Next Generation Superconducting Amplifiers and Resonators for Qubit Readout' with UNSW's A/Prof. Jarryd Pla and Diraq's Dr. Wee Han Lim.

During his master's at ETH Zürich, he worked in a couple of experimental quantum physics groups. This is where his interest in quantum computing sparked. He particularly enjoys the observability of quantum physics in the lab, exploring possibilities in a hands-on way.

Having settled in well after his move to Australia, Luca says he's particularly enjoying "working on a project from the ground up, from simulations and fabrication through to device measurement."

Two new exceptional Chief Investigators have joined FLiQC, lifting female representation in our Centre to 41%. The appointments reflect the Centre's continued growth and commitment to welcome strong female researchers. Dr. Giarmatzi replaces Dr. Huang after her departure to RMIT, and Dr. Holmes is a new CI for our Centre, working closely with Prof. Morello.

Ryan's research explores the computational complexity of quantum systems, distinguishing systems that demonstrate quantum advantage from those that can be efficiently simulated on classical computers. For systems exhibiting quantum advantage, Ryan develops formal complexity-theoretic frameworks. For systems that are classically simulable, he designs and analyses efficient classical algorithms.

Yoni will lead and manage the fabrication efforts across key projects. His work focuses on two main areas: developing NbTiN films and fabricating Aluminium or Tantalum Josephson Junctions. He will not only produce NbTiN films for more than five PhD projects but also play a crucial role in supporting students through the fabrication process of their quantum devices.

Connecting with prospective students at the Sydney Quantum Academy's Career Fair

FLiQC welcomed over 40 undergraduate students for a two-day FLiQC Next-Gen Quantum Computing School with support from Sydney Quantum Academy. 

Congratulations to all FLiQC Chief Investigators involved and Scientia Professor Andrea Morello, who will lead the newly funded ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance and Integration (QPI). We look forward to collaborating closely with QPI.
