Monthly News from Fenwick High School
November 2019
OPEN HOUSE: Sunday, November 17
Mr. Joseph Ori
Director of Admissions
Dear Future Friars and Families:
As we begin to hibernate in Chicagoland for the winter, we at Fenwick look toward the spring -- the potential of a new year and all the potential of spring. With that said, I ask you to "Choose Fenwick."

Fenwick High School, steeped in Dominican Catholic values, is a private institution situated in Oak Park, IL, near Chicago. Our administration plans to enroll approximately 300 freshman students, split evenly between boys and girls. Trained to be moral servant-leaders, our graduates attend top-tier colleges and universities throughout the United States and around the world.

The Friars’ rich academic and athletic traditions span nine decades. Our loyal alumni base includes men and women who are prominent leaders in their respective fields of endeavor: from the business world to the courtroom, from investment/financing firms to hospital operating rooms. This school year – its 91st – Fenwick is especially proud of its robust Advanced Placement Program as well as a recently launched STEM teaching and research space. The new Engineering & Innovation Lab features 3D printers for student and faculty use.  Overall, Fenwick’s campus and respect for learning provides the best environment for each child to lead, achieve and grow.

Please consider attending Fenwick’s fall Open House this Sunday, November 17th. For more information, go to www.fenwickfriars.com/admissions/own-it .

Warmest Regards,

Joe Ori
Director of Admissions

Fenwick Produced >120 AP Scholars Last Year
A mixture of sophomores and seniors participate in mock trial activities during an AP Government & Politics class.
Robust Advanced Placement (AP) instruction at Fenwick in 2018-19 produced an astounding 121 AP Scholars last school year. The private (Catholic) school in Oak Park, IL, administered 843 AP tests in 26 subject areas. Presently, there are 131 students enrolled in AP Psychology, a new course offering, this school year.

“The AP program at Fenwick gives our students a clear advantage when they reach college,” asserts Principal Peter Groom. “In some cases, students benefit from the same type of rigor they will see in their college classes. In other cases, students earn college credit, which enables them to focus on upper-level classes at the collegiate level,” Mr. Groom notes. “The wide range of options our students can explore while at Fenwick clearly benefits them.”

Last school year, nearly one in 10 Fenwick students was recognized as an AP Scholar:

Learning Resource Program
Our Learning Resource Program (LRP) is designed for students who have the ability to achieve academic success, but who also require individualized support in accessing the rigorous college-preparatory curriculum that Fenwick offers. Eligible students receive accommodations as part of an Academic Achievement Plan. The LRP staff, along with the students’ class counselors, has helped hundreds of students reach their full potential by teaching them new learning strategies as well as lifelong skills in independence, time management and organization.
What Is Fenwick's Learning Resource Program?
Meet Our Trio of College Board Hispanic Scholars
From left: Jonathan Izurieta (Grace Lutheran – Elmwood Park), Jordan Nigro (Lane Tech Academic Center – Chicago) and Julian Maldonado (Immaculate Conception – Chicago).
Last year more than 140,000 Hispanic or Latino juniors from high schools around the country applied for the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). Now seniors, three of these students from Fenwick High School have been named as National Hispanic Scholars by the College Board. Selection is based on Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This trio of Fenwick Friars scored in the top 2.5% of all PSAT test-takers.
"Some 17% of Fenwick’s student body comprises children of either Hispanic or Latino ethnicity," reports Principal Peter Groom. "We are fortunate to enroll young men and women who possess incredible talent and who work to maximize those abilities. Fenwick’s faculty, staff and administration are extremely proud of Jonathan, Julian and Jordan."

DYLAN GRESIK

Fenwick Graduation: 2016
Hometown: Riverside
Grade School: St. Mary Riverside
Current School:  Northwestern University
Current Major: Journalism and Political Science

Summer Internship: This past summer, I interned at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs, where I operated at the intersection of the executive and legislative branches. There, I helped advance Secretary of State Pompeo’s legislative agenda through assisting with Congressional testimonies, staff briefings and committee hearings. For my internship’s “capstone” project, I drafted a diplomatic cable to all 30,000 U.S. diplomats in our embassies and consulates around the world.

Career aspirations: After graduation, I am looking to translate my internship experience and passions to work full-time in the federal government in some capacity, specifically in the realm of foreign, defense and national security policy. Interning in Washington has allowed me a glimpse into the inner-workings of our government, and I am interested in affecting positive change in this area. Read more.

Summer Internship: At Internet Equity Research at JP Morgan in New York City, I helped initiate coverage on a stock, assigned a price target and investment rating to this stock, and created a financial model and financial analysis report. It was a great experience to get out of my comfort zone and work on building new skills from the foundation of my studies in school.

Career aspirations:  I want to be happy and financially stable, but other than that, my future is wide open.
