Dear hardworking staff and faculty,
Welcome back from fall break. Just a few months ago, we found ourselves in a faux snowstorm at our August retreat—and soon we will find ourselves immersed in a real Utah winter.
At this point in the semester, we have much to remark on and much to look forward to. Below you will find snapshots and in-depth updates from our five departments, a top-level view of faculty success in grants, contracts, research and scholarship, recent features and upcoming events, and ways to submit good news of your own work.
Warmest regards,
Frankie Santos Laanan
Dean

Capitol Reef Park Hosted Drs. Lauren Barth-Cohen, Lynne Zummo and K-12 Educators in Groundbreaking Field Experience |
|
|
Last June, Capitol Reef National Park hosted Drs. Lauren Barth-Cohen (below) and Lynne Zummo (below right) for their groundbreaking professional development program and field experience for Utah educators. Their National Science Foundation-funded program is called Learning to Observe: Unpacking the Development of Science Teacher Observational Expertise in Field Settings.
|
|
The transformative three-year study aims to advance our understanding of how educators acquire and then impart scientific observation skills to their students. Capitol Reef provided the ideal background. There, millions of years of geologic processes are visible due to uplift and abandoned Utah settler cabins are juxtaposed with petroglyphs from The Fremont Culture. Read more.

After 18 years in the College of Education, Rose Simper is retiring and will be dearly missed. Her career at the U began in 2005 after some coaxing from Cathy Nelson, former Special Education faculty member. 10 years later, Alayna Harris asked her to consider moving to the Dean's Office. She's been there ever since!
Rose says she has loved being on campus and has learned so much over the years—both professionally and personally—including this: that life is short and you need to enjoy and live it when you can. For Rose, this means season football tickets (in the red chairs!). Post-retirement, it will mean reviving old friendships, long conversations over coffee or drinks, longer vacations, home improvement projects, and spending time with children and grandchildren. She also plans to hike, golf, paint and read.
She will continue to volunteer as an usher for SL County Arts & Culture, so be sure to say "hello!" if you see her.
Rose's last day at the College will be November 15, 2023. Details on a celebration are forthcoming.
