Friday Update |
|
|
Good afternoon, colleagues. Here is the update from Academic Affairs.
In this last Update of the 23-24 academic year, I’m highlighting some of the outstanding work that has been accomplished across UWM with participation from governance groups, employees, and Academic Affairs.
|
-
General Education reform has passed the Faculty Senate. The reform will lead to more consistent quality across our general education array, providing students with additional supports and building habits that will lay the foundation for academic success in the major.
- The Office of Dual Enrollment has continued its dynamic growth. In 2019, UWM served 222 dual enrollment students; we are on track to serve 2,315 students in AY 24/25.
- The BA in General Letters and the MS in Connected Systems Engineering were approved by the Board of Regents.
-
UWM was awarded $20,000 in funding to support our Next Generation HIPs planning project. Project Co-Leads, Sarah Riforgiate and Dave Clark, will implement the Student Experience Project to eliminate inequities in college success by transforming the student experience through instructor formative feedback and evidence-based teaching practices.
-
M-Cubed Milwaukee Direct Admit: High school juniors attending any MPS school can apply to Milwaukee’s two largest colleges in less than five minutes at no cost.
-
Through the Moon Shot for Equity, our student success plan to reduce and eliminate equity gaps, UWM has realized a 5.8% increase in the six-year graduation rate for all freshman over the past three years, along with an 8.4% increase in six-year graduation rates for African American students and a 9.9% increase in six-year graduation rates for Hispanic students.
-
UWM has established agreements with four regional technical colleges to facilitate seamless admission and credit transfer processes for their graduates. Milwaukee Area Technical College, Waukesha County Technical College, Moraine Park Technical College, and Gateway Technical College graduates holding associate degrees are guaranteed admission to UWM with at least 60 transferable credits toward a bachelor's degree.
-
In Enrollment Management, our Student Financial Services team successfully navigated the turbulent waters of the US Department of Education’s rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial wellness and FAFSA filing workshops were offered to students, nearly 100% of 2024-25 scholarship offers were extended by April 1, and incoming students were successfully packaged for aid on April 30 – two weeks ahead of the forecasted schedule and before the May 1 college decision day. Additionally, the Registrar’s Office successfully implemented Stellic, a new degree management tool that offers enhanced functionality for students, including interactive and personalized scheduling and adaptive and guided academic planning.
-
OAIR launched Historical and Weekly Comparison of Enrollment Dashboard Comparison of Enrollment Dashboards in Power BI, held a spring webinar series for faculty/staff, and started planning for an Institutional Research Analytics Microcredential that will launch next year.
-
The new chemistry building is in the final stages of construction. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department will move in this summer and classes will be held there this fall. The design for site reconstruction between Lapham and EMS was completed with a focus on green space and outdoor teaching areas. It is anticipated that the old chemistry building will be demolished in the summer of 2025. The new entry to NWQ will open this summer and design work is underway to fully remodel the B building for Health Sciences once funding is attained from the state.
- In the online arena, several programs added online delivery, including bachelor’s in Art History, General Studies, and Criminal Justice and Criminology and master’s in Exceptional Education and Data Science.

We’ve really accomplished a lot this year and I just want to say how very proud I am of the hard work, dedication, and commitment to UWM demonstrated by colleagues across campus. My thanks to all of you for this forward progress.

I appreciate that campus radio station WUWM recently won 16 awards from two separate, prestigious state and local press and broadcaster association galas. WUWM won six awards at the Milwaukee Press Club Annual Gridiron Dinner, including two Golds, one Silver, and three Bronze awards. At the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Annual Gala, the station won ten awards, including six First Place awards, three Second Place awards, and one Third Place award. In addition to the five awards won at the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Associate Awards earlier this year, this brings WUWM’s total award count up to 21 awards for their coverage of the community in 2023. Well done, journalists!
I’m appreciative of Connie Schroeder and Ben Gautsch (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning), who were selected to receive a 2024-2025 Research Grant from the International Professional and Organizational Network. Their proposal, “Scaling and Sustaining the Eight Quality Dimensions of High Impact Practices in Courses: Centers, Cohorts, and Program Partnerships,” will examine five cohorts of UWM instructors who have created or redesigned their courses to embed the Eight Quality Dimensions of High Impact Practices that are associated with increasing retention, engagement, graduation, and closing the achievement gap, particularly for under-represented and first-generation students. Congratulations, Connie and Ben!
I appreciate Habib Tabatabai (Civil and Environmental Engineering), who has been interviewed by multiple media outlets as an expert on cable-stayed bridges, the type of bridge that will replace the Francis Scott Key bridge that collapsed in Baltimore on March 26. Well done, Habib!
Much appreciation for the 2024 Teaching Assistant (TA) Fellows recently announced by UWM’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. These individuals are recognized for their outstanding teaching and will provide training for the Fall 2024 TA Orientation. Kudos to:

Iftekharuddin Kahn recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as an adjunct in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. He has continuously taught part-time at UWM since earning his master’s degree in industrial engineering from UWM in 1974. No plans to retire are in the works, said Mr. Kahn.
