The 2018 Planet Forward Storyfest winners were announced Friday at the Planet Forward Summit. Winners, including SMPA's Ashley Gallagher, will go on a storytelling expedition this summer exploring Alaska's coastal wilderness.

The Institute for Documentary Filmmaking 2017 student production “Life in Strides” took first place at the Manhattan International Film Festival. The documentary short has screened at seven festivals across the country, taking home awards in California, Texas, Maryland and New York.
Patricia Phalen was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor article “Why embrace of 'Roseanne' doesn't always extend to politics and took first place in the Broadcast Education Association Open Competition for her paper Who Has Power Over the Text? A Comparative Study of the Role of Television Writers in America and France.
Frank Sesno was interviewed on CNN’s “Tonight With Don Lemon in the segment “Sinclair under fire for mandating anchors to read statement criticizing ‘fake news' and was quoted in the Politico article CNN jabs at Trump while the Post analyzes him.
Nikki Usher's book, Interactive Journalism: Hackers, Data, and Code, was reviewed in the Newspaper Research Journal
Silvio Waisbord published the article "From Health to Humanitarian Crisis in Venezuela: Options for the International Community" in the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs. 
David Ensor's conversation with former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper aired on C-SPAN.
Cheryl W. Thompson gave the presentations “Everyday Watchdog” and "Finding Data and Documents" at the 2018 Investigative Reporters and Editors Atlanta Watchdog Workshop and the National Association of Black Journalists Region III Conference in Atlanta.
