Thrive! Communications Committee: Call for Nominations

Thrive! has openings on our communications committee for the current academic year. We are looking for additional committee members who would be interested in learning the valuable skills of email marketing and website management. We invite all members to consider nominating themselves.

Leadership positions in Thrive! allow you to play a tangible role in enhancing the environment for women at Notre Dame while developing your own leadership skills in a low-risk, supportive environment. Committees also offer a place to learn and demonstrate skills you may not have the opportunity to use in your current position.

If you are interested in the communications committee opportunity, please complete the Thrive! Self Nomination Form by October 23, 2020. If you know someone who would be great, encourage her to apply too!

The selection of the Thrive! Committees will be administered by the Thrive! Officers and Steering Committee Chair, with the University's diversity statement in mind. These committee positions will begin immediately and run through June 30, 2021.

MentorND: Bringing Thrive! Members Together

Whether you're working on-campus or remotely this semester, the Thrive! MentorND platform is a great way for you to grow and nurture connections with other Thrive members and Notre Dame leaders who support our ERG's mission.

If you don't yet have a profile, go to mentor.nd.edu to create one today. This video will show you how. Remember to use your NetID email address when creating your profile. If you do have a profile, log on, and make any updates to your profile, preferences, and notification settings. This brief video reminds you how.

Once your profile is ready, reach out!

Take a few minutes this month to find a profile of someone you don't know and click "let's connect." Choose the "send an email" option. You can write your own email or customize prewritten templates seeking career advice, information about that person's role, or just making a new connection. This doesn't require a big time commitment, just a quick email exchange and potentially a brief chat over Zoom.

Most Important Lessons Learned: Never stop growing and learning.
Society tells us that we should aim for a certain job title or always be climbing the career ladder, but reality doesn’t work that way. Regardless of the plans you may have set for yourself, life will inevitably change them and require you to adapt and change course.
My father once told me, “the moment you become smart is the moment you realize you know nothing at all.”
Balancing work and family life has its ups and downs, but I tackle the challenges head-on. Each morning I start the day with my two young children, listening to music and dancing in the kitchen while eating breakfast. We focus on the positive and the good that surrounds us. If I am able to adapt and learn new things every day, I'm doing something right. Don’t wait for the one big training course to make you a better person, it's the little things that will strengthen your mind, body, and soul. Some days are more challenging than others but my goal is to stay focused and stay true to myself and my values.

TED Talk: My identity is a superpower — not an obstacle

America Ferrera

Hollywood needs to stop resisting what the world actually looks like, says actor, director, and activist America Ferrera. Tracing the contours of her career, she calls for more authentic representation of different cultures in media -- and a shift in how we tell our stories. "Presence creates possibility," she says. "Who we see thriving in the world teaches us how to see ourselves, how to think about our own value, how to dream about our futures."

While her talk focuses on her experiences in media, her message also has strong implications for women and minorities as they strive to advance their careers across industries.
