Tufts Student Life
Fall 2022 Campus housing update
April 8, 2022
Dear Student,
I write to share our progress in providing transformative residential experiences to first-year and sophomore students and on expanding these opportunities for juniors and seniors in the long term. Because this year's incoming class was larger than expected, we have taken steps to increase our residential capacity on campus to accommodate our rising sophomores and the incoming class next fall.
Construction will begin shortly for new temporary housing for 150 first-year students at 91, 93, and 95 Professors Row, the site of the current “mods,” pending approval from the City of Somerville. This new residential complex will:
  • Consist of three separate buildings, each housing 50 students and 3 resident assistants;
  • Each include a kitchen, a common area, a study space, numerous bathrooms including single stall options, and a laundry room;
  • Surround an attractive shared outdoor common area for socializing and activities; and
  • Remain part of our housing stock for at least 5 years. The modular housing for isolating COVID positive students next fall will be relocated to the Fletcher parking lot.
For rising juniors and seniors seeking campus housing for next year, we have opportunities available. If you are on the waitlist, ORLL will contact you within the week. If you are not on the waitlist but would like to request campus housing, please email ORLL.
In addition, we:
  • Have added beds through optimization programs, renovations to existing residence halls, and our CoHo properties;
  • Will add beds through an ongoing renovation to 114 Professors Row;
  • Are preparing to convert more Tufts-owned wood frame homes into apartments for juniors and seniors; and
  • Are actively planning a new residence hall with apartments and suites for 370 junior and seniors by fall 2026.
While we are excited to share these planned upgrades to our campus housing with you, what happens within the residence halls is far more important. To that end, we look forward to establishing innovative new programs through the Student Affairs Strategic Plan during the coming year.
With all best wishes for the remainder of the semester,
