2017 Winter Membership Drive

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! The Winter Pledge Drive is Near!

Support Wisconsin Public Television this holiday season by donating a few hours of your time! Join us in our Vilas Hall studios Nov. 25–Dec. 10 for our winter membership drive. More than 4,200 WPT viewers will be calling in to make an annual gift to your public television station. Volunteers are needed to speak with callers and input caller information into an easy-to-use software program. We also have a high need for volunteer refreshment hosts. This is a fun opportunity to network, meet new people, connect with our generous and thoughtful viewers that share your passion for public television, and enjoy delicious food donated by local restaurants. With each call that comes in, volunteers can help us achieve our end-of-year fundraising goal of $570,000!
Our live broadcasts this drive include The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years on Nov. 25, Our House: Wisconsin State Capitol on Nov. 27, Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller on Nov. 28, Guys on Ice on Nov. 29, American Masters: This is Bob Hope on Dec. 4, Christmas With Daniel O’Donnell on Dec. 5, and Africa’s Great Civilizations on Dec. 5.
Volunteer registration opens Friday, Oct. 20! For more information or to register to volunteer, visit wpt.org/volunteer or give Katie Dreps a call at 608-262-8508.

Tom McVary, 2017 V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year
The V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year Award is named in memory of community leader Tom Metcalfe, a friend of Wisconsin Public Television. It honors a volunteer demonstrating outstanding leadership and commitment to WPT. Our 2017 recipient is Tom McVary.
In 2004, Tom McVary volunteered with the American Family Insurance group for WPT’s Auction. Fast forward to 2017 and you’ll see Tom helping out at all of our membership drives, Auction, Garden Expo and Quilt Expo. Tom is a jack-of-all-trades, taking on leadership roles at our membership drives and expos, as well as being an auctioneer and phone bank captain at Auction. Regardless of the task, Tom is willing to take on any job and do it with a smile. Tom volunteered over 440 hours in the last year and was highly nominated by his fellow volunteers for this award. Thank you, Tom!
Here’s what Tom has to say about volunteering with WPT:
What is your favorite volunteer job at WPT? Oh, boy. Do I have to pick one? I think auctioneer. I get to be on TV [laughs]. I get to be part of something that’s bigger than me – and all of my friends see me on TV, all the texts fly in. It took the most to be able to do that. Even though I find it very easy to speak in public, it was extremely nerve wracking to be on for an entire event.
One of my goals – I’m laughing, because it’s a fun thing in the back of my mind – is to do every job at Auction, every job available, just to try it.
Why is WPT meaningful to you? For all the time I was growing up, the programs I watched and the things I could relate to, it’s time to give back. I feel honored to be able to stand up and say that I give my time to WPT. One core reason why the vast majority of my time goes toward WPT, and will continue to do so, is the leadership. From the very first time I volunteered, the supervisors all the way up to Jon Miskowski, the now director, make you feel so welcome, so needed and appreciated, that the good feeling I get from volunteering for that organization makes me want to go all in. You go home at night and you’re absolutely run ragged because you’ve spent an entire Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. doing a membership drive. Next day, you get up and do it again because of the people who work there.
What’s your reaction to being named Volunteer of the Year? It was kind of a goal, but I was a little overwhelmed. But I was very honored because of all the people who have come before me in that honor. I always saw opportunities to be more than just a guy that shows up. I got to be an individual who got to inspire people to volunteer as well. When I thought about it, I told myself, “I want to go full bore to see what I’m capable of and what can fit into my work schedule.” It just so happened that last year was the time.
What would you say to a first-time volunteer? “We appreciate you, and we hope to see you again.” Your first membership drive can be an intense learning period. I’d say, “Don’t worry; we’ve got your back. We’ll give you all the tools you need, and it becomes easier and easier the more you do it.”
Getting to Know You: Five Questions with Emma Starzewski, WPT Annual Giving Manager
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Manitowoc, which is on Lake Michigan about 90 minutes north of Milwaukee. Many people know it for the WWII submarine at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. I was a tour guide there when I was in high school, which left me with a lot of miscellaneous submarine knowledge.
What's your favorite movie or favorite TV show? I’m not sure I have one single favorite, but I do watch a lot of public television. I’m a fan of American Experience, The Great British Baking Show and Rick Steves’ Europe. And Ken Burns is one of the reasons I first wanted to work for public television – my family used to binge watch The Civil War about once a year when I was in high school.
Who was your favorite teacher in school and why? I’ve had a lot of great teachers, but if I had to single out one, I’d say my high school history teacher, Mr. Flaherty. If my love of history is coming through in these answers, Mr. Flaherty’s U.S. History class probably had something to do with that.
If you could share a meal with any three individuals, living or dead, who would they be? Jacques Pepin, Lidia Bastianich and Mary Berry. Best meal ever.
What's your favorite place in Madison to hang out with friends? The dog parks! You’ll find me at one of them just about every morning with my border collie, Lucy, and my beagle, Spot.
Thank You, Quilt Expo Volunteers!
Quilt Expo Breaks Show Attendance and Volunteer Participation Record
On behalf of Wisconsin Public Television and Nancy Zieman Productions, we would like to thank Quilt Expo volunteers for helping to make this year’s show the largest ever! Total attendance for the three-day event was 20,786, a new Quilt Expo record!
It was beautiful to see the outpouring of support from attendees, as thousands wrote notes of thanks and support to Nancy Zieman – who was absent from the show this year after announcing her retirement. These heartfelt notes were displayed on a wall at the front of the show.
As a volunteer, your support is key to the success of Quilt Expo. The many educational offerings, quilt exhibits, and front-of-show services our guests enjoy would not be possible without the efforts of our dedicated team of volunteers. 522 volunteers filled a total of 864 shifts!
Save the date! The 2018 Quilt Expo is Sept. 6-8.
