Spring 2023 E-News from UofM Parent & Family Services

| |
Whether it’s being away from home, living with a new roommate or starting a new course schedule, many students adjust to changes every semester. While some seem like they take the adjustment process in stride, others may find it more difficult.
No matter how it looks from the outside, adjustment is a process that all students go through. It’s common to struggle with adjustment, and it’s important to recognize that the process looks different for everybody.
Here are a few ways to help your student with adjusting to change:
|
|
|
| - Help them go at their own pace, while encouraging them to stretch the boundaries of their comfort zone.
-
Encourage them to establish small routines (same bedtime each night, favorite study spot, take regular walks)
- Encourage them to connect with other Tigers (Visit the Student Involvement Zone or Multicultural Affairs; find a student organization to join, explore intramural activities, join a study group, etc.)
-
Encourage them to prioritize their health and wellness.Getting enough sleep (7-9 hours per night), eating balanced meals and staying active can all help your student’s mind and body feel regulated when going through times of change.

A nice hug can make all the difference during life's challenges. While you may not be physically able to give your student a hug, you can still show them that you care about their wellbeing and success. Sending them a "Hug From Home" is the next best thing to your warm embrace!
Each Hug from Home purchase includes delicious candy, UofM memorabilia items and a personalized note from you. Order a spring semester Hug From Home by February 6. Your student will be able to pick up their special surprise treat on campus February 9-10 or 13-14.

Tiger SmartStart Program: Quick Facts
|
Through a partnership with Barnes & Noble College, the Tigers SmartStart program allows undergraduate students to receive required course materials for all classes for a flat fee per credit hour, regardless of how much each individual textbook or digital access would cost to rent or purchase separately. Getting textbooks is now much easier for students, which will ultimately improve their success at UofM. In many instances, families can reduce the cost of traditional textbooks by up to 50%!
Five Things Parents & Families Should Know:
- The cost to rent course materials is a flat fee of $24 per credit hour. (Ex: 12 credit hours = $288 vs. up to $576 if purchased separately!)
-
Upon registering for courses, undergraduate students will be automatically enrolled in the program, and the fee will be billed to the student's University account.
-
Students can opt-out of the program beginning 30 days before the first day of class and up until the second Friday of classes. For spring 2023, the deadline to opt-out is JANUARY 27. Refunds follow the University's USBS schedule.
- Students will receive an e-mail to verify their order and select a fulfillment preference. An e-mail notification will be sent when the order is ready for pickup or when it ships. Digital course materials will be delivered for the student's course(s) in Canvas.
Students will need to return physical textbooks at the end of the semester, by the last day of finals. There is an option to purchase the physical textbooks at the end of the semester.
