Research Development Operations Continuity
The Office of Research is taking proactive steps to mitigate the potential impact of COVID-19 on campus, and our top priority is the health and welfare of our campus. To that end, Office of Research staff has begun working remotely for the coming weeks. Guidelines for research continuity can be found on this page.
The Research Development office remains fully operational. Email is the best way to get in touch with members of our team, and all meetings will be conducted via Zoom.
Additionally, the Office of Research is posting agency notices, guidance and deadline extensions on this page, as we receive them.

Funding Information for COVID-19 Research
National Science Foundation Rapid Response Research (RAPID, competitive): Requests for RAPID proposals may be for up to $200K and up to one year in duration. Well-justified proposals that exceed these limits may be entertained. Strong encouragement to contact either a program officer managing an NSF program with which the research would be aligned or rapid-covid19@nsf.gov.
In particular, the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC) within the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering is inviting RAPID proposals and supplemental funding requests to existing awards that address COVID-19 challenges through data and/or software infrastructure development activities. More here.
National Institutes of Health Two opportunities specifically for COVID-19, but both through supplements on existing grants at NIAID or NIGMS:
NIAID, supplement (non-competitive): If proposed research on SARS-CoV-2/COVID-2019 is within the scope of your current grant, an administrative supplement is the best option to obtain additional funding. Researchers apply using the parent administrative supplement funding opportunity announcement (FOA): PA-18-591. Strongly recommended to contact your program officer to discuss if this may be an option for you.
NIH Urgent Award, supplement (NIAID, NIGMS - competitive): NIAID and NIGMS have both published a Notice of Special Interest (NOT-AI-20-030), which activates the Urgent Award FOA (PA-18-935). This mechanism allows researchers to request for an increase in support in a current budget period for expansion of the project's approved scope or research protocol. Reviews are conducted internally by the Institute (i.e., NIAID, NIGMS in this case) resulting in a time to award of less than 60 days.
Department of Energy DOE is looking for input. The Department encourages you to consider scientific questions that underpin COVID-19 response and that the research community may answer using DOE user facilities, computational resources, and enabling infrastructure. Please send research questions that the scientific community may address with DOE resources by email to SC.DCL@science.doe.gov. Responses will be reviewed beginning March 18, 2020. The Department is acting rapidly to leverage, and when appropriate provide prioritized access to, the full range of DOE user facilities and other facilities available at national laboratories to support the national and international effort to address COVID-19.

White House OSTP Call to Action (unfunded)
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has issued a call to action to the Nation’s artificial intelligence experts to develop new text and data mining techniques that can help the science community answer high-priority scientific questions related to COVID-19. As part of this offert, the Allen Institute for AI has partnered with leading research groups to prepare and distribute the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD-19), a free resource of over 29,000 scholarly articles, including over 13,000 with full text, about COVID-19 and the coronavirus family of viruses for use by the global research community.

Highlighted Opportunity
UC Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives (MRPI) 2021
The University of California (UC) is pleased to announce a research funding opportunity for UC multicampus collaborations. Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives (MRPIs) are multicampus or systemwide research collaborations that go beyond individual Principal Investigator (PI)-driven projects to benefit the UC research enterprise; strengthen UC’s position as a leading public research university; launch pioneering research in thematic, multidisciplinary, or inter-disciplinary areas; enhance education and training; inform policy; and benefit California and its people. The competition is open to all fields of scholarship. Applicants will have an opportunity to indicate which disciplines or interdisciplinary or thematic areas best describe the proposed collaboration. Proposals must be submitted by UC PIs. The award start date is January 1, 2021.
