The unit won Travel Portland’s 2024 International Impact Award in honor of their significant contribution to Portland’s international visitation, appeal, and profile. Upcoming Retirements in OGEIThree senior leaders in the Office of Global Engagement and Innovation will be retiring this summer: outgoing executive director Ron Witczak, OISSS director Christina Luther, and fiscal officer Debra Clemans. Each of them have worked at PSU nearly 30 years (if not more). We extend our gratitude to each of them for dedicating so much of their lives and service to helping our international student community and guiding our student support efforts at PSU.

PSU Day at the CapitolMore than 100 Portland State University students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters gathered in Salem on May 22 for PSU Day at the Capitol, an opportunity to advocate for support for higher education and programs specific to PSU. On that day, Senators voted unanimously to officially designate PSU as Oregon’s urban research university. The bill, HB 2556, underscores the unique role PSU plays in the state’s higher education ecosystem. Contributing more than $1.8 billion in annual economic impact, Portland State University is committed to educating Oregon’s workforce, engaging in public impact research, and welcoming students of all backgrounds to access the transformative power of higher education.

We often think of connection as grand gestures, but sometimes, it’s as simple as noticing someone and affirming their worth.
This year, I've had the honor to work with two efforts that came out of last year's Presidential Task Force Report on Building Community Through Dialogue that was co-chaired by Steve Percy and Ame Lambert. Two recommendations from that report resulted in the standing up of two working groups: Kindness Initiative and ThrivePSU, which both also directly connect to one of the Guiding Commitments in PSU’s Strategic Plan of "building a community ethos of care and well being."
Members of ThrivePSU are: Sheila Martin from the President’s Office, Taylor Schwab and Dana Tasson from Student Health and Counseling, Erin Bransford from Campus Rec, Paula Carder from the PSU Institute on Aging, and Dean Paul Halverson from the OHSU/PSU School of Public Health. This work also has a direct connection to PSU's launch of the Okanagan Charter and other campus-wide health promoting efforts.
Members of the Kindness Initiative include: Marcy Hunt and Quinn Westlynd from Student Health and Counseling, Heather Petzold from University Studies, Sean Duffy from Human Resources, Shayn Snyder from Transfer and Returning Student Resource Center, Atsu Nagayama from Campus Rec, Malik Thirdgill and Jasmine Miller from Athletics, and Jill Townley from the Office of International Student and Scholars Services.
Next year, you will see the work of these committees, such as Kindness Weeks each term, when the campus community will be invited to use the break in the daily class schedule to promote kindness and health and wellbeing enhancing activities like taking a walk or having tea or a meal together, or explicitly expressing gratitude for a colleague. We will also encourage using this time to take a break to find joy in a community-based activity, like doing art together or participating in a faculty staff pickle-ball tournament or a round of Jenga.
Meetings with the Kindness Initiative and ThrivePSU committees have brought me unexpected delight this year. I am grateful to all of the folx who made the time to share space (and German chocolate cupcakes) in this work as we have dreamed together about how to share these good vibes with the entire campus in the coming year.
In the meantime, I invite you to think about the last time an unexpected act of kindness lifted your spirits? More importantly—how will you be that person for someone else?
-Michele
